Glen Rock July 15, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Borough hall will re-open September 23 by John Koster The renovated Glen Rock Borough Hall is slated to re-open on Sept. 23 as contractors work ahead to recover from delays caused by the constant rain during the month of June and early July. “Everybody is working as hard and as efficiently as they can to make sure this gets done right,” said Mayor John van Keuren late last week. The renovation was designed to preserve the clock tower and the front entrance of the 1920s-vintage building while improving work facilities and upgrading the technical capacity. Lenora Benjamin, the borough administrator, said the $5.1-million renovation would add a conference room and administrative offices to one of the two new wings, and a conference room and a mechanical room and technical room to the other wing. Cramped halls, obsolete heating and air conditioning equipment, and a lack of space convinced the council years ago that the building had to be either renovated or replaced. An alternative plan to raze the existing structure and start from scratch was rejected when a consensus of those residents who expressed an interest said they wanted to see the old building preserved. Two attempts to fund renovation failed because the building boom before the present recession failed to bond enough money to meet the demands of contractors. In the crunch, a group of local contractors and engineers met with the council and convinced the council members to examine the options. The contractors said large amounts of space no longer had to be set aside for the storage of paper copies because most filing is now done electronically, and warehouses are available for the storage of those paper Mayor John van Keuren at the job site. records that have to be legally retained. The present municipal administrative center is located at 175 Rock Road, where the office workers and the police have been operating since construction began on the renovated municipal building.
