Page 12 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • July 15, 2009 Area Glen Rock sculptor aids Willard students with project Glen Rock sculptor Howard Engle helped bring a multi-month art project to completion at Willard Elementary School in Ridgewood. Approached a year ago by Linda Bradley, mother of fourth grade twins at Willard, Howard was asked to help develop an art project for all the four fourth grade classes to work on this year and then enjoy themselves next year as their ﬁfth grade graduating gift to the school. Engle went beyond expectation offering the idea for each child to bead his or her own unique wire butterﬂy and then help the children build mobiles to hang in the front lobby of the school. The beaded butterﬂies glisten, dangle, and even chime at the entrance to the building. Engle met with students four times throughout the year to take them through the mobile building process. He approximates that he donated close to 100 hours on the project, handling everything from purchasing supplies with money donated by the fourth grade families, to teaching the children exactly how to bead the pieces and then actually constructing the mobiles in his garage in Glen Rock and transporting them and hanging them at Willard. Making the project even more poignant, Willard’s long-time art teacher, Barbara Morris, passed away during the school year. The plaque for the mobile will mention that the work was inspired by Morris. While the butterﬂies are already hanging in the school lobby, the dedication plaque will be presented in September and will read: These butterﬂy mobiles are dedicated to Willard School and inspired by our dear art teacher Barbara Morris. “Thank you, Willard, for giving us the wings to soar through life!” From the Graduating Class of 2010.
