(continued from Entertainment page) costs, even if that propriety is her personal version. She is comic because what she wholeheartedly believes what she says, and her steamroller vision of things is amusing. Traditionally, Lady Bracknell is played by an actress of stature. Edith Evans and Judi Dench played the role in two film versions, for example. Redgrave brings to the role self-assurance and an absolute command of the stage. Both her entrances are staged to underscore her importance, and her timing is perfect. She knows when to throw away a line and when to slow down and make sure every syllable is enunciated. Wilcox is a pleasant Jack and Carlson’s Algernon is quite the scamp, though his posturing in Act I is a bit over the top even for this play. The two actors have good on-stage chemistry and engage in comfortable repartee. They are believable as best friends. They bicker, they disagree, they share feelings, and they openly discuss the women they love. Carlson is especially good with props, whether they be a teacup and saucer, a bit of muffin, or a dressing gown. He also uses his arms as if they are great sweeping wings, looking as if he wants to occupy as much of the stage as possible as he delivers his lines. Rather than look excessive, these gestures fit the play and his character nicely. Boras’ Gwendolen is very good, combining a mannered delivery of her dialogue with a tendency to assume poses from time to time to accentuate her feelings. Winters’ Cecily, on the other hand, is strident when she should be charming and soft. “The Importance of Being Earnest” is a well staged, funny production, highlighted by Redgrave’s presence. It is always a pleasure to see a theater classic given a fresh, exciting interpretation. Performances are Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m., Thursdays at 2 and 7:30 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $92 and may be ordered by logging on to www.papermill.org or by calling the Paper Mill Playhouse box office at (973) 376-4343.

(continued from Restaurant page) O’Toole as the prep-school classics instructor whose heart is won by music hall performer Clark. The Terence Rattigan script (based on the James Hilton novel) traces several decades in Chips’ life. Director Herbert Ross nicely integrates the songs by Leslie Bricusse, which range from a music-hall ditty sung onstage by Clark (“London Is London”) to a couple of beautiful ballads (“You and I,” “Walk through the World”). O’Toole performs his songs as soliloquies in the talk/ singing style Rex Harrison employed in “My Fair Lady.” “Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust” (Koch Lorber) is a revealing documentary about how the Dream Factory depicted or ignored the Holocaust on screen from World War II through the end of the 20th century. Narrated by Gene Hackman, it includes clips from more than 40 films, rare newsreel footage, and interviews with filmmakers (Steven Spielberg, Sidney Lumet), leading scholars, and witnesses to the events portrayed. During the early years of World War II, Hollywood shied away from direct anti-Nazi movies, but Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 changed that, and more anti-Nazi entertainment films with heavy doses of nationalistic propaganda were produced. Clips include scenes from Lumet’s “The Pawnbroker” with Rod Steiger, Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List,” an episode of TV’s “This Is Your Life” featuring an Auschwitz survivor, and the 1978 mini-series, “Holocaust.” The documentary shows the power of film to shape public opinion and, by ignoring a serious issue, to turn a blind eye to human injustice.
