Scholarships for young performers available The Walter Engel Festival of Young Performers announces its 18th annual weekend of concerts, to be held on April 4 and 5, at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood. The festival celebrates the musical gifts of young performers, providing a noncompetitive performance venue for elementary, middle and high school students from all over northern New Jersey. The programs include singers, pianists, and other instrumentalists ranging from exceptional beginners through advanced level performers. In addition, scholarships are awarded every year to high school seniors who perform in the festival and whose musical skills and participation in community outreach set them apart from their peers. Engel, who died in 2007, touched the lives of countless individuals through both the Festival of Young Performers and his earlier work as a teacher and conductor. Parents, performers, and teachers are invited to learn more about Engel’s remarkable life and to download performance and scholarship applications by visiting the website at www. festivalofyoungperformers.org. Applications, including forms and audition materials, are due by Feb. 11. Fresh Air Fund seeks volunteers The Fresh Air Fund’s Bergen County area committee is currently preparing for summer 2009 and eagerly awaiting the arrival of their New York City visitors. To ensure that this summer is special for Fresh Air children, The Fund is seeking volunteer members and host families to sign up now. Each summer, close to 5,000 New York City children, ages six to 18, enjoy two-week vacations with volunteer host families in suburban and rural communities across 13 northeastern states and Canada. Local Fresh Air Fund volunteers recruit and interview host families, arrange travel and coordinate fun activities in their communities.
In 2009, The Fresh Air Fund celebrates its 133rd summer of bare feet, sandcastles and starry nights for children from some of New York City’s low-income communities. It only takes one conversation with a child to realize the impact of a Fresh Air experience. For more information on how to join the local Fresh Air volunteer team, call Patricia Titone at (973) 214-2269, or The Fresh Air Fund at (800) 367-0003.
