Valley doctor provided aid after flight landed in Hudson
On Jan. 15, U.S. Airways Flight 1549 was forced to make an emergency landing in the Hudson River after striking a flock of geese shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport. Ferries in the area rushed to their aid, while witnesses of the crash peered on from their apartments and office buildings along the New Jersey and New York sides of the river. Soon, news of the landing streamed through television, Internet, and radio outlets. Raymond Basri, M.D., F.A.C.P., an Internal Medicine physician on The Valley Hospital staff, was one listener who took immediate action to lend all who were aboard a helping hand. Dr. Basri was picking up medical equipment in New York City when he heard about the incident through his car radio. As a volunteer firefighter with the Excelsior Hook and Ladder Company in Middletown, New York, and deputy Orange County fire coordinator, he contacted his dispatch center to inform his colleagues of his location and intention to assist at the scene. Dr. Basri then turned on the sirens he had in his car, and followed the NYC Fire Chief’s vehicle down to the NY Waterway ferry terminal where all of the passengers and crew members were taken. After clearing three security checkpoints where he displayed his credentials as both a firefighter and a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration, Dr. Basri found himself to be the only doctor in the terminal. He checked in with the EMS lieutenant in charge, and quickly tended to the most serious case: a flight attendant with broken legs. Once the flight attendant was triaged and transported to Roosevelt Hospital in NYC, Dr. Basri examined the remaining flight crew (continued on page 22)
