Since 1975 Recently, Dr. Jay Adlersberg visited the Oak Street Branch of the Ridgewood YMCA, to discuss the importance of strength training for cancer patients dealing with Lymphedema for a segment on ABC News. The Ridgewood YMCA is known for its pioneer efforts in bringing the Stanford University program, Living Strong, Living Well to area cancer patients and survivors. During his visit, Dr. Adlersberg interviewed LSLW instructor, Joanie Petrelli and LSLW graduate Stephanie Kruse. Both are breast cancer survivors living with Lymphedema, which is swelling of the arm after removal of lymph nodes in the armpit. Many studies have shown that strength training is beneficial for those with Lymphedema because the contraction of the muscles causes a pumping action that helps to move lymphatic fluid away from the affected area and back toward the chest. Strength training exercises also encourage deep breathing to ensure an adequate supply of oxygen to the tissues. Living Strong, Living Well is a 12-week, small group strength training program designed for cancer patients/ survivors who have recently become de-conditioned or  Confidence  Discipline  Better School Grades PARENTS: Your children can develop the qualities needed to overcome peer pressures, get better grades at school, achieve goals and become a leader.
