Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • August 12, 2009 Glen Rock Physics teacher to discuss fusion at library by John Koster Robert Cherdack, a physics teacher working at Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, will discuss “The Basic Processes in Controlled Fusion” at the Glen Rock Library on Wednesday, Aug. 12 from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the library’s meeting room. Dr. Cherdack received his doctorate in applied physics from Columbia University and has spent many years as an engineer and applied scientist working on controlled fusion and other electric generating technologies. His discussion will define thermo nuclear fusion, magnetic confined fusion, and the use of lasers to produce inertial confinement fusion. He will cover the conditions required for fusion and how they may be achieved, and the advantages for generating electricity using controlled thermo nuclear fusion. He will also review the next step in magnetic confined fusion: the ITER. ITER is a world-wide collaboration that will construct an experimental power reactor in Cadarche, France with first plasma in the second half of the next decade. ITER is being designed to produce hundreds of megawatts of power on a regular basis. In addition to discussing the plans and preliminary designs for ITER, Dr. Cherdack will also describe the recently completed National Ignition Facility that uses lasers to produce inertial confinement fusion. The program is cosponsored by the Science Group of the Activities Club, the Friends of the Library, and the library. Glen Rock resident Ron Greenberg is the coor- dinator of the program. There is no fee and registration is not required. For additional information, contact the library at (201) 670-3970.
