To qualify for the Dean’s List, a student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Women’s circle set Temple Israel’s monthly Rosh Chodesh women’s circle will meet on Sunday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. Rosh Chodesh, or “head of the month,” is an ancient festival that celebrates the new moon. Since early times, it has been especially sacred to women. The circle is open to all adult women. Each meeting includes prayer, discussion, refreshments, and socializing. West Side offers Summer Choir School The West Side Presbyterian Church Summer Choir School, in its 37th year of teaching and serving the young people of the community, will meet Aug. 17 through 21 from 8:30 a.m. to l p.m. daily at West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood. The program is open to all children who have completed grades two through eight, regardless of church affiliation. Choir School is designed for singers who find joy in praising God through music. Each young person participates in a small choir rehearsal and two all-school rehearsals daily. Bible study, varied worship experiences, and an elective activity complete the morning schedule. The staff will lead the program under the direction of Joanne Harris Rodland, minister of music at West Side; and Deborah Holden-Holloway, associate minister of music. Busting myths about aging The next meeting of Ridgewood’s Seniors (Highlights in Leisure Time) will be held Aug. 13 at 10 a.m. in the Ridgewood Village Hall Community Center, 131 North Maple Avenue. The guest speaker will be long-time village resident, Dee DeBernardis from the Center for Alcohol and Drug Resource. She will discuss The Facts and Myths about Aging. The Wellness Initiative for Senior Education Program celebrates healthy aging and educates older adults on a variety of topics. The Ridgewood Municipal Alliance will be sponsoring this three part series. The subsequent programs will be Sept. 17 and 24. The WISE program’s topics include nutrition and exercise, medication use, stress management, grief and loss, depression, and substance abuse. Refreshments will be served following the programs. All village residents are invited to join HILT. Membership dues are $10 per year. Monthly meetings include entertainment or informational presentations. In addition, HILT, in conjunction with the Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department, sponsors monthly trips to various points of interest, a spring social, fall picnic, and annual holiday party. The Ridgewood Community Center offers various programs for seniors at a nominal cost, and many HILT members participate. Classes include Jazzercise, Tai Chi, strength and motion, and art. Bridge, Mah Jongg and billiards are also available. Brochures are available at the Community Center and The Stable. University announces Dean’s List The University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware has named the following Ridgewood students to its Dean’s List for the spring 2009 semester: Julianne Takako Gelbaum, a freshman nursing major in the College of Health Sciences; Claire Elizabeth Gould, a junior English major in the College of Arts and Sciences; and Ann Catherine Martino, a sophomore university studies major in the College of University Studies. To be placed on the Dean’s List a student must have a grade point average of 3.33 or above for the semester. DeFalco exhibits artwork Artist Penny DeFalco will be displaying her watercolor paintings at the Stable Art Gallery during the month of August. For over a decade, DeFalco has embraced the media of watercolor, devoting her career to a long loved passion of artistic expression portraying some of life’s beauty. She has displayed her works in many juried exhibits as well as private solo shows; her most recent solo showing at the Riverton Country Club in Riverton. DeFalco is currently a member of the New Jersey Watercolor Society and The Rehoboth Art League of Delaware. Library events announced The Ridgewood Public Library Friday Movie Matinees will feature on Aug. 14, “Mall Cop” (2009). This movie is rated PG-13 and runs for 91 minutes. The matinees begin at 1 p.m. The World Cinema Foreign Film and Discussion will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. “The Edge of Heaven,” (Germany, 2007) will the film and the discussion will be led by Library Director Nancy Greene. Do not click on any links, for the same reason. Be aware that the links often connect to a phony IRS website that appears authentic and then prompts the victim for personal identifiers, bank or credit card account numbers, or PINs. The phony websites appear legitimate because the appearance and much of the content are directly copied from an actual page on the IRS website and then modified by the scammers for their own purposes. Contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to determine whether the IRS is trying to contact you. Forward the suspicious e-mail or url address to the IRS mailbox phishing@irs.gov, then delete the e-mail from your inbox. Genuine IRS website The only genuine IRS website is IRS.gov. All IRS. gov Web page addresses begin with http://www.irs.gov/. Anyone wishing to access the IRS website should initiate contact by typing the IRS.gov address into their Internet address window, rather than clicking on a link in an email.
