Internal Revenue Service offers post-tax season tips
“New Jerseyans who have already filed their federal tax returns may still have questions,” according to New Jersey’s IRS Spokesperson Gregg Semanick. “Here’s what you need to know about your refund status, mistakes and what to do if you move or owe the IRS.” You can go online to check the status of your 2008 refund 72 hours after IRS acknowledges receipt of your efiled return, or three to four weeks after you mail a paper return. Be sure to have a copy of your 2008 tax return available because you will need to know the filing status, the first Social Security number shown on the return, and the exact whole-dollar amount of the refund. To check on your refund, do one of the following. • Go to www.irs.gov, and click on “Where’s My Refund.” • Call 1-800-829-4477 - 24 hours a day, seven days a week for automated refund information. • Call 1-800-829-1954 - hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time. If you move after you filed your return, New Jerseyans should send IRS Form 8822, Change of Address, to the Internal Revenue Service Center in Kansas City MO 64999. If you are expecting a refund, also notify the post office serving your old address. This will help in forwarding your check to your new address (unless you chose direct deposit of your refund). Errors may delay your refund or result in notices being sent to you. If you discover an error on your return, you can file an amended return. You should correct your return by using Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, if after you have filed it, you find that: You did not report some income. You claimed deductions or credits you should not have claimed. You did not claim deductions or credits you could have claimed. You should have claimed a different filing status. Once you file a joint return, you cannot choose to file separate returns for that year after the due date of the return. However, an executor may be able to make this change for a deceased spouse. If you have not filed your tax return, do so immediately to minimize the late filing penalty based on the unpaid balance. The late filing penalty is five percent per month up to five months a return is outstanding. File your return and pay as much as you can. The IRS will send you a notice for the balance due and will charge interest and penalties on the unpaid balance. You can also request a payment plan prior to receiving the IRS notice. You can ask to make monthly installment payments. You can apply for an IRS installment agreement using the IRS Web-based Online Payment Agreement application on IRS.gov. This application allows eligible taxpayers or their authorized representatives to self-qualify, apply for, and receive immediate notification of approval. You can also request an installment agreement by submitting a completed Form 9465, Installment Agreement Request.
LAN Associates earns excellence award
LAN Associates, Engineering, Planning, Architecture, Surveying, Inc. recently received an award from the New York Chapter of the American Council of Engineering Companies as part of the organization’s 2009 Engineering Excellence Award. LAN received the silver award for architectural and engineering consulting services in the special projects category for the installation of a state-of-the-art electron beam coater at the Advanced Coating Technologies facility in Wallkill, New York. ACT is a joint venture between Chromalloy and Pratt & Whitney, which provides mass production high temperature specialty coatings for jet aircraft engines and turbine vanes. The thermal barrier coating process vaporizes zirconia ceramic with electron beam guns at 40,000 volts. The resulting vapor cloud then condenses on the jet engine parts and increases the turbine’s operating efficiency. The result of this project was a premier coating facility, housing the largest electron beam coater in the world. The efforts of Holt Construction Corporation and Vista Electrical Contractors, Inc. contributed to the success of this project. The installation of the new equipment has doubled the facility’s production capacity and created additional jobs in the community.
Dr. Sidney Hassenfeld, a health fitness specialist and instructor in exercise science at Bergen Community College, recently attended the annual National Research Conference sponsored by the American College Sports Medicine and held at the C.N.N. Center in Atlanta. Dr. Hassenfeld reports that great strides have been made in the understanding and implementation of exercise as a tool to help those individuals who suffer from chronic diseases, including osteoporosis, diabetes, and arthritis, to become fit and lead normal and active lives. The American Medical Association, in conjunction with the American College of Sports Medicine and the U.S. Surgeon General, declared that exercise is medicine. If done

properly, and regularly, exercise reduces stress, lowers high blood pressure, strengthens muscles and bones, and generally improves quality of life. In the past, exercise was geared toward the young and healthy. New forms of exercise have been developed which enable seniors and those with medical issues to not only exist, but to flourish. The surgeon general recommends people walk briskly for 30 minutes on a daily basis and engage in strength and endurance exercise at least twice a week. Dr. Hassenfeld is available to answer questions. He can be reached at (201) 906-6898.
