The 10-acre site located near the Waldwick border is being gradually developed into a mixture of sports field and natural-style parkland. Ten Hoeve thanked Janet Fricke, assistant to the manager, for pursuing the state funds for the first open space land purchased in part with In the spring of 2008, George Washington Middle School Orchestra Director Janelle Jacoby began to investigate music festivals for her chamber orchestra to attend. She soon learned that most music festivals do not accept middle school. However, after sending in an audio recording of the ensemble, a resume, and literature repertoire list to Manhattan Concert Productions, the local ensemble was invited to participate in the National Orchestra Festival held at Carnegie Hall earlier this month. Jacoby organized several student-run fundraisers, including Garage Sales, a Practice-A-Thon, a Bake Sale, and a Solo Ensemble Concert. The proceeds from these events covered the trip to the festival. Jacoby and 15 George Washington students fulfilled their dream of performing in the National Orchestra Festival on the Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall, and the group was ranked as one of the top two groups that performed in the festival. The ensemble competed against high school (continued on page 20) Students perform at Carnegie Hall Ridgewood’s tax set-aside. New Jersey Green Acres, Ten Hoeve said, had provided a total of $2 million for the purchase of the land beside Hillcrest Avenue, once a boarding farm for saddle horses with a stable and pasture. The plans now being implemented after lengthy negotiations between the council, the Ridgewood sports groups, neighbors, and environmentalists, include a standard-sized athletic field with a diagonal overlapping field that cannot be used simultaneously. The sloping ground on the section of land farther from the road will be developed into a natural walk with trails around the pond. J. KOSTER Janelle Jacoby, at right, with her students.
