Glen Rock April 22, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 7 The community is invited to attend a lecture by Sandy Rubenstein at the Glen Rock Jewish Center on Thursday, April 23, at 8 p.m., as part of GRJC’s Yom Hashoah/Holocaust Remembrance Program. Rubenstein’s father, the late Joseph Horn, was a Holocaust survivor. His book, “Mark it with a Stone,” published in 1996, details his experiences as a concentration camp prisoner and his struggle to survive. Horn was also interviewed by Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation in 1995 and left behind a three-hour visual and oral testimony of his recollections of the war years, a gift for his family and for future generations, a tribute to the loved ones who perished and a record of his ordeal. Horn and his wife, Dinah, were members of Glen Rock Jewish Center for 20 years. Rubenstein, who is also a teacher at Horace Mann School in New York, speaks to audiences of all ages about her father’s legacy and the lessons of the Holocaust. As she relates her father’s story, sharing excerpts from his book, she intersperses video clips of her father speaking directly about his experiences. She addresses the need for young people, our future leaders, to reflect Rubenstein to speak at Holocaust remembrance on their own moral responsibilities to stand up against today’s hate, bigotry, and genocide. Rubenstein’s lecture will be preceded by a short memorial service. Glen Rock Jewish Center is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue and Jewish community resource that fosters lifelong Jewish experiences with a full slate of activities and services, including Sisterhood, Men’s Club, Adult Education, Youth Groups and more. The Tea at Two on Tuesday Book Discussion Group will chat about “The Spellman Files” by Lisa Lutz on Tuesday, April 21 at 2 p.m. The group meets in the Glen Rock Library’s reading room. The book is a spirited, funny debut from screenwriter Lutz that mixes “chicklit,” mystery, and a dose of TV nostalgia. The story centers on Isabelle Spellman, a 28 year-old private investigator who works for her family’s PI agency. Written in a conversational first-person style that includes Izzy’s files, such as her list of ex-boyfriends and their exit lines, various mysteries all come together in a rush of humor and chaos. It’s all casual, swift, and Library offers books discussions hip. But the complex emotions associated with growing up and letting go, warm the tale. Multiple copies of the book are available at the reference desk. This afternoon group is the newest addition to the book discussion offerings at the Glen Rock Library. The library’s Poverty Awareness Book Discussion Group meets the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. The club is cosponsored with the Glen Rock Poverty Awareness Group. The May 7 title is to be announced. The Glen Rock Public Library is located at 315 Rock Road. & owner Emmy Eliya are celebrating their birthday!
