Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • April 15, 2009 Ridgewood The 23rd annual Interfaith Holocaust Remembrance Service, organized by the Ridgewood Inter-Religious Fellowship, will take place at Temple Israel and JCC, 475 Grove Street in Ridgewood on Sunday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. This year’s theme, “We Shall Never Forget: Memory of Genocide Must Lead to Positive Action,” will be reflected in the presentation of guest speaker and Temple Israel member Dr. Will Recant. Dr. Recant is assistant executive vice president of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. His latest project has been bringing into reality the vision of a special school for the many orphan children survivors of the Rwandan genocide. The Agahozo Shalom Youth Village aims to create a safe and structured residential community that will be a place of hope where traumatized youth can “dry their tears” (Agahozo), “live in peace” (Shalom), and become positive citizens in the rebuilding of their country. ASYV is modeled after the Yemin Orde Youth Village that was founded in Israel in 1953 as a home for orphans of the Holocaust and continues to receive orphaned Interfaith Holocaust remembrance service set youngsters to help them establish a life in Israel. Rabbi David. B. Saltzman of Temple Israel, Ridgewood, has coordinated this year’s observance. The service will feature a candle-lighting ceremony by Holocaust survivors and members of their families, readings by village clergy and musical selections performed by the Interfaith Choir conducted by Cantor Caitlin Bromberg. In addition, there will be musical selections performed by Tamara Freeman, a member of Temple Israel and a scholar of Holocaust music education. There will be special exhibit about the Agahozo Shalom Youth Village, Rwanda and a display of the many activities of the local interfaith communities will be shared. The observance is free and open to the community. For complete information, please call the synagogue office at (201) 444-9320.
