Page 2 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • April 1, 2009 Villadom Happenings Camp offered to children with Asperger’s West Bergen’s Asperger’s Related Services is sponsoring Camp SOAR, a summer day camp for children and teens, ages six to 15, with Asperger’s Syndrome. The camp will provide social skills training, outdoor fun, and arts and crafts at the Center for Children and Youth, located at One Cherry Lane in Ramsey. Camp SOAR will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is one, six-week session, which will run from July 6 through Aug. 14, and two, three-week sessions that will run from July 6 through 24 and from July 27 through Aug. 14. West Bergen has received a grant from The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation to initiate Camp SOAR’s CIT Program for teens and young adults with Asperger’s Syndrome. The counselor-in-training program (CIT), coupled with the West Bergen’s years of experience with individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome, make this summer camp completely unique in Bergen County. Asperger’s Related Services is among the specialized programs offered by West Bergen, located in Ramsey, Ridgewood and Oakland. Since its inception in 1999, the Asperger’s Related Services Department has become a leader in this field and has served more than 1,000 children and adults. Fyke sets annual Celery Farm Cleanup Fyke Nature Association will hold the annual Celery Farm Cleanup on April 11. Participants are invited to meet at 9 a.m. at the end of Green Way in Allendale for a few hours of active conservation. All are welcome to join Fyke volunteers to spruce up the preserve. Club to discuss Patterson novel The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of Kevin Patterson’s “Consumption” on Thursday, April 9 at 7:15 p.m. In the novel, tuberculosis is only one kind of consumption afflicting the people of the Canadian Arctic outpost of Rankin Inlet; their spiritual erosion turns out to be the far worse threat. Copies of the book are available at the library circulation desk. The book club welcomes new members regardless of residency and meets at the library, 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. Career coaching workshops offered Career Coach Eli Amdur will conduct two free workshops at Cedar Hill Christian Reformed Church, 422 Cedar Hill Avenue in Wyckoff. The first session is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7at 7 p.m. Amdur will discuss “Smart Job Search Strategies.” He will cover topics such as using the most effective job search techniques, developing your three most important area skills, developing good search habits and techniques, and targeting where the jobs are. On April 21 at 7 p.m., Amdur will discuss resumes and cover letters. This workshop will include what a good resume communicates and how should it do that, smart things to do on a resume, things to avoid on a resume, why a cover letter may be more important than the resume, and the one thing cover letters should do. Amdur conducts workshops in career coaching and an adjunct professor at FDU Graduate Business School and a corporate leadership consultant. Junior League offers workshop for girls The Junior League of Bergen County is offering its popular StarPower! workshop on Saturday, April 4, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at Bergen Community College, in Paramus. In its third successful year, StarPower! is a free halfday interactive workshop for fifth and sixth grade girls and their mothers (or guardians). This unique workshop includes interactive sessions and presentations on topics such as self-esteem, cliques, cyber bullying, Internet safety, and conflict resolution. Girls will learn how to handle the many challenges they face every day. The adults will learn Members of the Honorary Committee for West Bergen Mental Healthcare’s Annual Brunch met recently to plan the 32nd Annual event set for April 19 at 12 noon at the Sheraton Crossroads Hotel in Mahwah. The 2009 recipients of West Bergen’s Distinguished Service Award are NJ Senate President Richard J. Codey and Mrs. Mary Jo Codey. For more than 30 years, the Codeys have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of New Jersey’s citizens. They have been strong public health care advocates – especially for mental health. Brunch to honor Codeys about Internet safety and how to understand their daughters better. This spring, StarPower! will include Girl Talk, which includes discussions about friendship and self-esteem and provides the girls with practical tools for problem solving. As part of Girl Talk, the girls will have the opportunity to engage in role-play and work as a team to find solutions for dealing with peer pressure, cliques, and more. Creative Interventions, an improvisational theater group, whose skits address a wide range of relevant topics in a highly interactive format, will also be back. Space is limited. Lincoln Tunnel Run set An underwater race from New Jersey to New York City and back: that’s the challenge runners will face in the 23rd Lincoln Tunnel Challenge 5K Fun Run/Walk for Special Olympics New Jersey scheduled for April 26. The Lincoln Tunnel Challenge is presented by AmeriHealth New Jersey; hosted by the Port Authority NY/NJ, and sponsored by the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics New Jersey. The only USATF certified 5K tunnel race in the country, the Lincoln Tunnel Challenge begins at the south tube of the tunnel in Weehawken, and continues to NYC and back. This year’s run will introduce two starting times for runners of all abilities. Runners with 5K finish times of under 25 minutes will start at 8:45 a.m. All other participants will start at 9:15 a.m. Category prizes will be awarded.
