This five-week workshop will be held on Wednesdays from 5 to 6 p.m., Oct. 21 through Nov. 18. The cost of the workshop is $300. Registration deadline is Oct. 17. Walk for Pancreatic Cancer planned The Third Annual Ron Weber Walk for Life, which raises funds for the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 10 a.m. in Dunkerhook Park in Paramus. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. There will be one-mile and three-mile paths for walkers and a seven-mile path for runners. All donations are tax deductible and may be doubled if individuals’ employers have a matching gift program. The nearly $200,000 raised as a result of the last two events has been used to support a medical research project at The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. Animal Refuge fundraiser set The Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. will have a gift shop in the Copper Tree Mall, 350 Ramapo Valley Road (Route 202) in Oakland, on Friday, Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a wide range of gifts, some of which are animal related. All proceeds benefit the animals at RBARI, a not-for-profit, no-kill shelter. Vision screening offered to seniors The Northwest Bergen Regional Senior Center is hosting a vision screening conducted by the Passaic County Board of Social Services through a funding grant from the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired on Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to noon. This screening is free and open to all area seniors age 60 and over. There will be a screening for distance visual acuity, which measures the eyes’ ability to perceive objects in the direct line of vision. The second test, a visual field test, identifies those at risk for glaucoma. Call (201) 445-5690 to register. Clients will be seen on a first come, first served basis. The Northwest Bergen Regional Senior Center is located at 46-50 Center Street in Midland Park and is open to all area senior citizens age 60 and up. Children invited to hike As part of its Garden Saturday series, New Jersey Botanical Garden will sponsor a Kids’ Hike on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m. A $3 donation is requested. Join NJBG’s Nancy Cochrane and Rich Cahayla-Wynne for a morning of enjoyment for children ages six and up. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The program will begin with a short presentation on what to do if you get lost in the woods, followed by an easy hike through the woods around the garden. Participants should wear comfortable shoes and meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center. The program will be cancelled in the event of rain. The New Jersey State Botanical Garden at Skylands, which appears on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places, is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day of the year. The popular event will feature plants, including perennials and mums, household items, jewelry attic treasures, small appliances, small furniture, and toys. Proceeds from the sale benefit the PEO’s scholarship, loan and grants, designed especially for the advancement of women’s education both locally and internationally. Church offers Flying Solo The Singles Ministry at the Church of the Presentation is offering its Flying Solo program for individuals experiencing separation, divorce, or the ending of a relationship through death beginning Thursday, Sept. 24 and running through Nov. 12. The group will meet at 7:30 p.m. in meeting room four. During the eight weeks, the program will address: discovery yourself-your unique dreams, goals, and needs; creating a support network in this new time of life; employment and financial changes; the many facets of dating and creating new friendships; creating a spiritual environment for the individual and their children; and co-parenting. The program will be a series of round table discussions with a flexible format customized to meet individual needs. Dementia seminar set The Holland Christian Home will hold a free seminar for seniors, “Defining Dementia,” on Thursday, Sept. 24 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Home’s Chapel at 151 Graham Avenue in North Haledon. Dementia is a general term used to describe the loss of memory and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Amy E. Matthews will be the presenter. Participants will gain a better understanding of Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia. Information will also be provided about the 10 warning signs of dementia, the importance of receiving a thorough diagnostic evaluation and the current treatment options including supportive services. Vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, and other related disorders will also be addressed. Light refreshments and tours of the Holland Christian Home’s facility will be available.
