The signs were described by Dennis O’Hara, the senior vice president of NW Sign Industries. O’Hara said his company has been designing signs for the bank for over 25 years. He said the first variance was requested because two signs are needed on the overhang of the drive-through lanes, but only one is permitted by the zoning ordinance. He pointed out that the combined sizes of the two signs are well within the square footage permitted. O’Hara said the second variance was required to permit two free-standing signs at the front of the building, where only one is permitted. He pointed out the directional sign is needed for safety. He also explained that the sign on the drive-up ATM is necessary to display all the information required by the banking laws. That sign will not be visible from the roadway. Andrew Kohut, the attorney for the bank, advised that he had received a letter from Bergen County officials which indicated they had no objection to the two free standing signs on the front of the building near a county roadway. Three members of the board recused themselves from consideration of the sign variance application to avoid a conflict of interest. Board member Brian Trava voted against granting the variances. He said he felt the bright white signs with blue letters were an eyesore and the site was too over-signed for such a small piece of property. The Hudson City Savings Bank is located adjacent to the U.S. Post Office building, west of the Century Oaks building, and across the street from the TD Banknorth branch. F. MCMAHON Jill E.
