Midland Park October 28, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 7 Midland Park Superintendent of Schools Dr. William Heebink will be leaving the district at the end of June for medical reasons. He tendered his resignation during last week’s board of education meeting. Dr. Heebink said he had notified the board of his medical condition in early September, but he and the board had jointly agreed “it would be best to not release the information publicly until October so that the school year could begin as normally as possible.” “The board is saddened by this turn of events,” said board President Richard Venditti. “Dr. Heebink has made a positive impact on the district in the short time he has been here. He is a very dedicated individual Heebink to step down as district’s superintendent and puts education before anything else. He has breathed new life into our administration, staff and curriculum,” Venditti added. Dr. Heebink said that he had submitted his resignation “with true regret, but realism,” because he envisions a tough road ahead following malignant cancer surgery in April. “After consultations with three doctors at Sloan-Kettering in early August, it became clear to me that my health concerns were going to require me to run a marathon (figuratively). “I fully intend to finish that race, and I also fully intend to finish this school year. In doing the latter, I will need to work when my energy level is at its peak, and that will vary from day to day. However, I will strive to still work at least 10/7 and not miss any meetings. To continue such an arrangement beyond this year would be unfair to the school system and to me,” he explained in a letter distributed to parents and the community at large last week. “The emphasis should be on finding a good, even better person for the district and not on me from this time forward. In the months ahead, I will still invest ample time to work with others in the district to make further gains,” he added with characteristic humility. “The board is ready to face the challenge of replacing Dr. Heebink, and we are confident we will find someone for the next school year,” Venditti said. He added that the board had decided to undertake the search for a new superintendent on its own rather than hire a consultant. He said trustees were familiar with the process, having gone through it only a year and a half ago. Dr. Heebink assumed the superintendent’s position in the K-12 Midland Park district in June, 2008 under a three-year contract. He had retired the previous year as superintendent of the 9,600-student Clarkstown School District in Rockland County. Raised in Wisconsin, Dr. Heebink received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, his master’s from Western Michigan University and his PhD from Florida State University at Tallahassee. Prior to serving as superintendent at Clarkstown, he was superintendent of the Port Washington, N.Y. and the Superior, Wisconsin, school districts. GET BACK IN YOUR SKINNY JEANS FOR THE HOLIDAYS! • 25% OFF Reducing Program • Refer a New Client and Receive 2 FREE Weeks • Purchase Now.
