‘Wild Things’
(continued from Entertainment page) tone in expanding the sparse book for the screen, but he may have over-expanded it, to the picture’s ultimate detriment. Older kids might find the movie too juvenile and would probably prefer edgier fare (“Wild Things” is rated PG). Adults have so many other choices open to them, “Wild Things” might not top their lists of “must see” movies. I suppose people who grew up with the book and have affection for it might be curious to revisit the Land of the Wild Things on the big screen and perhaps share that world with their own children. Adapting such a short book has its challenges. Sendak incorporates a message about the value of controlling one’s anger and distinguishing between rules meant to protect
and those applied meaninglessly. You have this in the film, but you have to look for it. The ending lacks the feel-happy quality of most kids’ films, meant to sent you out of the theater smiling. This one will probably create more questions than it will answer. Adults might enjoy a Freudian interpretation, but kids prefer a straightforward, clear narrative. When the film strays from that, it is problematic. Why does Max tire of kingship? Why are the Wild Things sorry to see Max leave? What has Max learned from his fantastic adventure? Perhaps these are topics for discussion between parents and their kids after the movie is over. “Where the Wild Things Are” opened to almost universally positive reviews. It is a unique film, to be sure, and worth investigating for its outstanding visual design. Director Jonze has given the movie his own imprint while preserving the elements of Sendak’s book. Devotees of the book will be impressed. Those who are not familiar with the original might find the movie distant and unsatisfying. Palin) in a two-disc set containing two never-aired British documentaries that chronicle the group’s growth, fondness for Spam, and their conquest of America. In “Before the Flying Circus,” interviews with the cast members, archival home movies, university-era cast recordings, and extensive, often surreal reminiscences trace the influences that inspired this innovative partnership. “Monty Python Conquers America” relates the amazing story of the Pythons’ enormous popularity in the United States, initiated by PBS broadcasts. Hank Azaria, Judd Apatow, Jimmy Fallon, Carl Reiner, and David Hyde Pierce discuss how Monty Python affected their lives. “Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure” (Walt Disney Home Entertainment) is one of those made-for-DVD films that capitalized on Disney animated classics, in this case “Peter Pan.” It is autumn and the fairies of Pixie Hollow are on the mainland changing the colors of the leaves, tending to pumpkin patches, and helping geese fly south. The rare Blue Moon will rise, and when its light passes through the magical Fall Scepter that Tinker Bell has been summoned to create, Pixie Hollow’s supply of pixie dust will be restored. However, when the well-meaning fairy accidentally puts all of her community in jeopardy, she must venture out across the sea to set things right. Both Blu-ray and DVD editions of the film include animated “scenes you never saw” and a guide to Pixie Hollow.
