The best aspect of the model exhibit is that you can get really close to see the rich craftsmanship of each model. Touching is a no-no, but it’s cool to check out the gruesome detail on a slasher model, see the assortment of materials involved in a model’s construction, or simply appreciate the time and care that go into such a creation. What’s Halloween without costumes? Chiller Expo will sponsor a Halloween Costume Contest on Saturday at 8 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in five categories: Best Costume, Best Makeup, Most Creative Costume, Scariest Costume, and Best Children’s Costume (ages five through 15). Doors open Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. Hours on Oct. 31 are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Nov. 1, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $25 per day and are available at the door. Children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Shandling opened each show speaking directly to the audience, joined in the story itself, and paused from time to time to make observations to the camera. Occasionally, other actors would chide Garry for paying too much attention to the audience, not enough to the plot. The studio audience members were sometimes used as performers. Steve Allen used to do this often, once taking his entire audience outside for a run around the block to invigorate them. Over the years, guest stars played themselves and were woven into the fabric of the show. They include Tom Petty, Rob Reiner, Vanna White, Dan Aykroyd, Martin Mull, Gilda Radner (in her last TV performance), Carl Reiner, Chevy Chase, Red Buttons, and Jeff Goldblum. Starting in 1988, the Fox Network aired episodes originally shown on Showtime. The 16-disc box set contains 72 episodes. A bonus feature takes the viewer behind the scenes, illustrating how a typical show was put together. Other featurettes focus on the writers’ roles, cast reminiscences, and a “Show & Tell” sharing of goodies from the series. There are also episode outtakes, original promos, and 18 commentaries. “Peanuts 1970s Collection, Volume 1” (Warner Home Video) is a two-disc set containing six animated TV specials starring those precocious Charles M. Schulz folk: Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Schroeder, Peppermint Patty, and Snoopy. Holidays are well represented by shows that originally aired at Thanksgiving (“A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving”), Easter (“It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown”) and Valentine’s Day (“There’s No Time for Love, Charlie Brown”). Debuting on DVD are “Play It Again, Charlie Brown” and “It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown.” Also included is the new featurette “Woodstock: Creating Snoopy’s Sidekick.” ARIES - Mar 21/Apr ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 2020 If you’ve been down the dumps, it’s If you’ve been down in in the dumps, it’s time get over it, Aries. If this mega-set seems is a bit too pricey at $119.96, you can wait for a three-DVD version to be released on Nov. 3 that will include 44 performances and over four hours of induction speeches and rehearsal footage. “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show: The Complete Series” (Shout! Factory) is the Showtime series that premiered in 1986 starring up-and-coming comedian Shandling in a series that stretched the parameters of traditional TV sitcom by using the potential of television more humorously and creatively, paving the way for future comedy series, reality TV, and even the Internet. Shandling was a TV sitcom writer (“Sanford and Son,” “Welcome Back Kotter”) who left writing to pursue his standup career. “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” is a surreal look at the daily life of a young single man who is a comedian. Shandling did anything and everything to break the “fourth wall” between performer and audience.
