Waldwick’s 90th Anniversary
Nearly 100 people attended a meeting hosted by Habitat 10-7-09 janine for Humanity of Bergen County last week to share with residents of Waldwick and surrounding communities the WaldwickBanner(10-7-09) organization’s plans for renovating the rundown house at .75x10” 101 Wyckoff Ave. in Waldwick and to seek volunteers to help with the project. Sponsored by Valley National Bank, the evening included pizza and soft drinks along with the unveiling of renderings and floor plans. Attendees also had an opportunity to meet with Bob Price, a former Waldwick resident who will be overseeing the renovation project; and to interact with members of Habitat’s board of directors. Residents who spoke at the meeting expressed support for the project and offered suggestions for recruiting volunteers and fundraising. Some expressed concern about traffic flow at the busy intersection during construction but were told that no heavy equipment would be needed because it is an existing building and no additions are planned. Susan Safire, Habitat’s executive director, said that the renovation work would begin sometime this month after all permits have been received and should take about nine months to complet. Bergen County approval is necessary because the site is on a county road. She said that the organization is currently in the process of doing pre-construction work, which involves putting up stairs for safety

Habitat unveils plans; seeks funds, volunteers

reasons and removing all debris and rocks. The work is expected to cost about $300,000, which Habitat has to raise in addition to recruiting volunteers. A fundraiser at last week’s meeting netted $175. The matching cash price was won by former Waldwick Mayor Frank McKenna, who donated his share to the cause. Habitat hopes that residents and local religious and civic
organizations will come up with creative as well as triedand-true fundraising efforts to help raise the funds, including bake sales, walks and runs, car washes and canisters in stores. In addition to financial support from Valley National Bank and other corporations, the Waldwick project has received a pledge of $50,000 in matching funds from the Oritani Bank Foundation. Volunteer workers – men as well as women - are also essential. Saffire said that although state law restricts people “swinging a hammer” to persons 16 and over, even teenagers can help by serving as gofers or serving lunch to other volunteers. Future homeowners must put in 400 hours of “sweat equity” into their own home, which they purchase at cost, with no interest added. Habitat purchased the abandoned house from the Borough of Waldwick for $1 a year in July and will renovate it into four condominium apartments for low and moderateincome families. The units – two with two bedrooms, one with three bedrooms and one with four - will help meet the borough’s obligation for affordable housing. Once the units are sold to qualified buyers, the property will be returned to the tax rolls. Borough officials report that the project will have no financial impact on local taxpayers. The property, which had fallen into disrepair, was acquired by the borough in a foreclosure sale in 2008.
