Early deadline for holiday Villadom Happenings Bridge lessons available The non-profit North Jersey Bridge Association is offering free bridge lessons to students in grades six through 12 with trained teachers through schools, libraries and community centers in northern New Jersey. Students will learn this challenging game with 12 to 16 hours of beginners’ lessons taught by trained bridge teachers at no cost to students or the schools. To participate in the program, a sponsoring teacher or program director must be available to work with the bridge teacher to recruit students, help with supervision, and communicate with parents. Lessons are usually held after-school for 90 minutes. Adjustments can be made to the schedule as needed. Ridgewood Singers present Christmas program The Ridgewood Singers will present its winter concert, “Christmas around the World,” on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, East Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood. Holiday music from France, Spain, Germany, Ukraine, Austria, Africa, and Appalachia will be featured. Benjamin Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols” will also be performed. This 40-member community chorus performs and practices in Ridgewood. Established in 1953, the chorus mounts a spring and winter concert annually with a repertoire that ranges from the classical choral to popular show tunes. Fresh Air Fund seeks host families This November, many families in Bergen County are thankful for something special: the gift of their friendship with a New York City child. Through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Town program, local families open their hearts and homes to inner-city children as volunteer hosts for up to two weeks during the summer. By volunteering as a host family for summer 2010, the spirit of Thanksgiving can continue in a volunteer’s home throughout the year. Since 1877, The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-forprofit agency, has provided free summer vacations to more than 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities. Nearly 10,000 New York City children enjoy free Fresh Air Fund programs annually. Cherish the Ladies perform Cherish the Ladies, an all-woman Irish band, will perform traditional Irish music and dance in a holiday show, Celtic Christmas, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. at William Paterson University’s Shea Center for Performing Arts. Pre-show activities will begin at 1:15 p.m., starting with a question and answer session with Cherish the Ladies. An Irish step dance group will perform at 1:40 p.m. and during the show. Christian Singles host Holiday Dance Christian Singles of North Jersey will host a Holiday Dance Party on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. at the Faith Community Christian Reformed Church Barn, 530 Sicomac Avenue, Wyckoff. Free computer course offered Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff is offering a two-day computer course open to the community. “Introduction to Excel” is being offered from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Dec. 10 (Part I), and 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Dec. 11 (Part II), at the CHCC campus, 301 Sicomac Avenue in Wyckoff. Class size is limited, and participants need to preregister two weeks prior to course date. The course fee is $25 and includes hands-on training and materials. Valley offers class for babysitters The Valley Hospital Center for Women, Children and Family Education is offering a Babysitters’ Preparation class on Wednesday, Dec. 9 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. This class gives caregivers the necessary information they need to safely care for a child. Topics to be presented include feeding, holding and changing a baby; infant safety concerns; and where and how to contact the police, parents, pediatrician, poison control centers, and other emergency personnel.
