Page 12 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • November 25, 2009 Wyckoff Sophomore Brian Jung and a friend recently biked from their hometown of Wyckoff to the center of Philadelphia to raise funds for lupus research. Brian was inspired to help find a cure by his mother, Song Jung, who has this auto-immune disease. Brian’s father, Richard Jung, suggested a bike trip, and Brian enlisted his friend Doug Choe, a student at Exeter, to come along. Neither boy had much biking experience, so they trained for several weeks last summer. Brian’s father helped the boys plot a 120mile route on local roads using maps. Their destination was Pat’s and Gino’s cheese steak restaurants in the heart of the City of Brotherly Love. The two set off in late August after raising pledge money from family and friends. The bikers averaged 50 miles a day, riding from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Roads that looked pleasantly level on the maps were, in reality, studded with steep hills, potholes, and lots and lots of traffic. “At one point, we were on a steep incline that felt like four stories straight uphill on an unpaved road,” Brian reported. They kept in touch with their Township cyclists raise funds for lupus research road crew (supportive parents in an air conditioned car) via cell phone and met them for lunch. At night, the boys and parents rendezvoused again and checked into a local hotel for some rest and relaxation. It took two-and-a-half days to complete the journey, less time than they had estimated. Thanks to the Internet maps and his father’s GPS, the boys never got lost, although the tangled streets in downtown Philadelphia posed some challenges. In the end, they arrived at their destination and rewarded themselves with cheese steaks from both Pat’s and Gino’s. Brian and Doug raised $910 for lupus research and received a thank you letter from Sandra Raymond, president of the Lupus Association of America, who wrote, “Your contribution and commitment to raise awareness of lupus means a great deal to all people affected by lupus. The board of directors and I are very grateful for your support!” Brian is already planning to continue biking for lupus, including a Wyckoff to Boston trek next summer. He extends an invitation to other bikers to come along to help him raise money -- and to enjoy some baked beans and clam chowder in Beantown -- for a very good cause.
