Special education program earns School Leader Award
by Frank J. McMahon The Franklin Lakes Board of Education has announced that a special education program developed by Dr. Marcy Pryor, a Franklin Avenue Middle School special education teacher, has won the New Jersey School Boards Association’s 24th Annual School Leader Award. School Leader Awards recognize public school programs that provide innovative and creative ways to educate children. The project also solidified the idea that great lessons can be developed through real-life situations and innovation.” Pryor emphasizes that, while the main profits from Beads ‘n Me are enhanced self-esteem and a love for learning, the monetary profits to date total more than $4,000 and all profits are donated to various charities which are decided upon by the students. Those charities include: Iron Matt, Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, American Cancer Society, Oprah’s Angel Network, Alliance for Lupus Research, the North Shore Animal League, and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The students participate in all aspects of business from production to controlling inventory and interacting with customers. In addition, the students create graphs and spreadsheets, solve real-life word problems, use a cash register, learn measurement skills, and write letters. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roger Bayersdorfer praised Pryor for her work on the program and congratulated her on the award. He said, “The selection of this award helps Dr. Pr yor’s program stand out as one of the (continued on page 35)
