At school, he is a member of Interact and has participated in Hammer for Habitat and Buddy Walk and was particularly inspired by his participation in the Holiday Festival, in which students visit children from Paterson during the holiday season. Once a week, he volunteers in the Homework Helpers program at Franklin Lakes Public Library. Summers have found Peligri traveling with the Overland Program to the Berkshires, MA and Santa Fe, NM to teach impoverished children reading, writing, and English skills. Rice volunteers at Project Lovematch, a not-for-profit organization that provides recreational tennis to a special needs population ranging in age from eight to 42 with limitations of autism, mental retardation, Down syndrome, visual and neurological impairments, cerebral palsy, and attention deficit disorder. She provides instruction to small groups and in one-on-one situations and has continuously demonstrated kindliness and compassion to the special athletes with whom she has been involved. Rice’s efforts have favorably impressed her student’s family. The Humanity Award recipients will be recognized at a gala celebration held 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, at Cedar Hill Church, 422 Cedar Hill Avenue, Wyckoff. Each honoree will receive a certificate appreciation from CLCC and from the Bergen County Executive’s Office. The celebration will include musical presentations offered by Broadway stars Julie Hanson and Richard Stillman, and talented teens.
