Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • November 4, 2009 Area Sixteen eighth grade students from the Academy of Our Lady in Glen Rock competed in the eleventh annual Saint Joseph Regional High School Scholastic Olympics. For the third consecutive year, the academy team won first place overall in the competition. Over 20 schools from Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Union, and Rockland counties competed in the boys’ and girls’ divisions for trophies in art, English, history, mathematics, science, spelling, theology, computer, and Superquiz (topics from all of the above combined with music and current events). Students who won individual trophies include: Derek Bastinck of Wayne, first place, history; Paul Brennan of Glen Rock, second place, math; Molly Cunningham of Glen Rock, second place, science; Casey Lynch of Hawthorne, second place, math; Fiona McDonald of Glen Rock, second place, English; Sophia Kranenburg of Ridgewood, third place, theology; and J. Conor Mackie of Glen Rock, third place, Superquiz. Additional members of the Academy of Our Lady team are students who earned their place by their expertise in selected areas and their high academic standings. Saint Joseph Regional High School Principal Barry Donnelly remarked in the opening ceremony how gratifying it was to hear the students cheering for their classmates’ academic achievement as loudly as they cheer for their athletic achievements.
