Carriage house transports car enthusiast to another era
by Bob Jephson
This past year, I had the good fortune to be able to “go back” nearly 100 years and try to dispose of a few cars and other pieces of 20th century memorabilia. Gray Construction, a road and bridge building firm started in 1917, was housed in the former Robert McCurdy Carriage House in Morristown. Now called Gray Supply, they moved to Randolph in the ‘70s. The carriage house is being sold after being vacant for the past 30 years and it must be cleared of all contents. In the old office upstairs is a picture of the original 12 White trucks they owned back in the early ‘20s. Also present are three Edison record players, a machine for making fan belts, and an old inner tube repair machine. On the walls are round bottom pails full of sand for putting out fires. Each room has a water place, which look like fireplaces, for providing water to horses. I could go on and on. Anyway, when you have space, you save things. There’s a 1920 Ford Depot Hack, a 1931 Slant Window Ford Cabriolet, a 1951 Ford Victoria, a 1979 MGA Midget with only 1972 miles, a 1932 Pontiac and other pieces of equipment including an 1880s hit and miss saws a hand fire pumper and several old compressors, one of which was used to heat the building at one time. In the back is a ’76 Olds Cutlass, a ‘70s Cadillac and Mrs. Frelinghuysen’s ‘50s Dodge Sedan. Also in a shed is an Eshelman “car” (bigger than a breadbox, smaller than a golf cart). I love history and being in this building makes me forget it’s (the 21st century).
