Page 2 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • May 13, 2009 Villadom Happenings Asperger’s workshops available The Asperger’s Services Department at West Bergen Center for Children and Youth, the premier facility for Asperger’s Services in Bergen County, will present a sixweek workshop for siblings of children with Asperger’s Syndrome or related disorders, including HFA, PDD, NOS and Nonverbal Learning Disabilities. Beginning on Tuesday, May 12, from 7 to 8 p.m., the series will be held at the Center for Children and Youth, One Cherry Lane in Ramsey. The workshop will cover a range of topics, such as tolerance, coping strategies, focusing on a sibling’s strengths, disclosure, fairness, creating quality time and finding common ground. Siblings ages 12 to 14 are invited to participate. Rachael Ostrowski, M.A., Ed.S., will facilitate the series. The cost for this six-week program is $250. On Wednesday, May 13, the Asperger’s Related Services Department will hold a one-time workshop for Evaluation and Treatment of Adults with Asperger’s and Similar Disorders from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at West Bergen Mental Healthcare, 120 Chestnut Street, Ridgewood. This event will focus on assessing the adult with Asperger’s Syndrome and optimizing various interventions to address the additional needs of this population. Cost is $25. Contact Kelly Doyle at (201) 934-1160 for registration. Roads to close for gas main upgrades This month, PSE&G will be replacing old mains. The work will require the excavation of many Wyckoff roads. PSE&G anticipates starting Edwards and Parmley streets May 12 or 13. Residents and motorists may experience some inconvenience during the period of work. All work is anticipated to take place weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. unless situations give rise to longer efforts. Residents on each street will be notified by PSE&G approximately one week prior to commencement of the work by way of a door tag. The work is anticipated in the following groups in order listed: Group C: Annett Court, Colgate Avenue, Girard Avenue, Hopper Avenue; Group D: Evers Street, Henry Street; and Group E: Ridge Road. PSE&G has also scheduled the replacement of its gas main on Wyckoff Avenue (Bergen County Arterial Route #87) in two areas: Wyckoff Avenue from Franklin Avenue to Frances Place and Wyckoff Avenue between Spring Meadow Drive and Woodbury Drive. Harlem Wizards to play Ramapo Raiders The Harlem Wizards, a basketball show team, will play the Ramapo High School Raiders faculty and students on Wednesday, May 20 at 7 p.m. in the Ramapo High School gym. The event is a fundraiser to benefit Rampage, the student newspaper, and Ad Astra, the yearbook. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Refreshments and souvenirs will be available for sale. Book Club to discuss Adichie novel The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “Half of a Yellow Sun” by Chimamanda Adichie on May 14 at 7:15 p.m. The novel is a commanding, sensitive epic in which the dreams and hopes of 1960s Nigeria are told through the minds and experiences of compelling characters. NJBG hosts Spring Wildflower Walk As part of its “Garden Saturday” series, the New Jersey Botanical Garden will sponsor a Spring Wildflower Walk at the NJBG in Ringwood on May 16 at 10 a.m. A $3 donation is requested. NJBG wildflower expert Nancy Bristow will point out the spring bloomers in the Wildflower Garden, including a spectacular display of Japanese primroses along the Wildflower Garden’s brooks. The walk will explore several different terrains and the plants that inhabit them. Invasive species targeted for removal The community is invited to join the “Garlic Mustard Brigade” at Allendale’s Celery Farm Natural Area on Sunday, May 17. Garlic mustard is an invasive plant that forces out native plants. This weekend, there is a chance to help the Fyke Nature Association fight back with a team approach. Meet at 2 p.m. at the end of Green Way off Franklin Turnpike. The process should take about an hour. Participants should bring work gloves. Fyke Nature Association, the all-volunteer group that maintains the Celery Farm, will supply the trash bags.
