Melissa Hughes will become the new director of the Midland Park Memorial Library beginning April 1. She replaces Jean Scott, who resigned earlier this year after several years in the position. “We are absolutely thrilled. We feel we couldn’t have found a better candidate. She’s just unbelievable. All the references we received are glowing,” commented Anne Polhemus, president of the library board of trustees. Polhemus said one of the first tasks for the new director will be to discuss with the trustees the results of the survey conducted by the Friends of the Library last fall
Melissa Hughes to head borough’s library
and make recommendations on those findings. “We know our library is important to Midland Park’s residents, and we want it to fill the needs of everyone who wants to use it. We want it to be a place where one can just run in and quickly pick up a book, but also a comfortable place for those who want to spend some time there,” Polhemus said. Hughes has spent the last several years traveling with her husband before settling back in the area. She had served as the library director in Allendale from 1996 to 2004, and previously held a similar position in Wyckoff from 1989 to 1996. While she was in Allen-
dale, the library was named one of the top best American libraries in the country, and one of the top ten small libraries. A Ho-Ho-Kus resident, Hughes graduated from Drew University with a BA in political science and received her master’s in library science from Simmons College in Boston. Polhemus said the library board is planning an open house to introduce Hughes to the community sometime in late April.
