March 11, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 3 Midland Park Recyclables now delivered to a new vendor The Borough of Midland Park has shifted its recycling business to a new vendor in order to deal with a known cost factor throughout the year. The borough council at its last meeting approved a contract with Atlantic Coast Fibers, LLC of Passaic for receipt of paper, cardboard, metal and commingled recyclables at a set price through Dec. 31, 2009. “In looking at the budget for 2009, we didn’t want to sit with a big unknown. We wanted to know our costs,” explained Borough Administrator Michelle Dugan in recommending the change. Previously the borough delivered its recyclables to a Paterson facility which paid out a floating market rate, according to Dugan. In January, however, the company started charging the borough for commingled items rather than paying for the material. Last year the borough made more than $70,000 from its recycling program. The Borough of Midland Park is trying to get increased transportation services for residents attending the Northwest Bergen Senior Activity Center on Center Street, including the possibility of recruiting volunteers to do the job. Several residents had asked the governing body for help, prompting Mayor Joseph Monahan to contact County Executive Dennis McNerney’s office, and Councilman Scott Pruiksma to ask several ministers in town if their Seniors want increased bus services congregations could help out. The senior center bus picks up and delivers riders to the facility daily. On Thursdays, however, the bus is later used to take seniors to doctors’ appointments and other scheduled medical needs. Since Thursdays are not very busy transportation days, according to the seniors, the driver would have time to provide transportation services to other venues, such as shopping, on that day, they said. (continued on page 22) “We didn’t want to do a budget with numbers that fluctuate. This is a know amount, and it won’t cost us anything,” the administrator said. Atlantic will accept metal and commingled glass, cans and plastics at no charge to the municipality. The company will pay a fixed $5 a ton for paper and cardboard for the duration of the contract. The borough was limited in its ability to change vendors because its existing contract with its curbside collector of recyclables limits the distance to the dumping facility to 15 miles. Dugan said that the curbside contract will be rebid later this year, affording the borough other options for collection and marketing in the future.
