However, as children reach middle school, it becomes increasingly important to help him or her make the transition from structured homework to becoming an independent learner capable of managing time, thinking critically, and taking initiative. Independent learners are self-motivated, curious, and take responsibility for their own learning. They value learning and strive to understand new concepts. Eileen Huntington, co-founder of the Huntington Learning Centers, offers these tips to help children become independent, Huntington Learning Center lifelong learners: Discuss the assignment. If the child has trouble conveying this information, ask questions that may help. What did your teacher say? Does this problem look similar to one you’ve solved before? Do you have everything you need? Encourage the child to attempt the work independently. If he or she doesn’t know how to do a problem, have him or her skip it and try the next one. Teach resourcefulness. If your child asks you how to spell a word, help him or her look it up. If he or she needs to research a topic, have the child ask the neighborhood or school librarian for help. Provide guidance. When your child requests assistance, remember that your job is not to give the answer, but to help the child get the answer. Avoid being overly involved, but be available to answer questions. If your child struggles to complete homework independently or spends a significant amount of time without results, call 1-800-CAN LEARN. Huntington finds the root of the problem and creates a customized program that enables each child to excel. Founded in 1977, Huntington Learning Center is the nation’s longest-running supplemental education services provider. This industry leader provides instruction in reading, writing, spelling, phonics, math, study skills, and SAT and ACT preparation to tens of thousands of students from kindergarten through grade 12. Approximately 50 to 60 percent of those over the age of 40 have vein problems. Some people do not have visible veins, but have aching, painful legs. New laser therapy now makes it possible for individuals who have issues such as varicose veins to avoid old techniques that involved vein stripping, general anesthesia, hospital stays, pain, and scarring. “We are now routinely performing laser therapy of varicose veins,” Dr. Ned Majid notes. “This is the most advanced treatment available and involves a same-day office procedure that corrects the source of the problem. A tiny laser fiber is inserted near the knee and seals the inside of the vein to eliminate it.” Varicose and spider veins are unsightly and sometimes painful, but are often misunderstood. At the Metropolitan Laser Vein Ned Majid, MD, FACS and John Chuback, MD, FACS, FCCP Institute, the doctors use nonsurgical, highly effective treatments that can be carried out with minimal discomfort and without hospitalization. Laser treatments have little or no side effects, and patients are generally able to resume normal activities the next day. Varicose vein procedures are covered by Medicare and most insurance plans. Metropolitan Laser Vein Institute is located at 265 Ackerman Avenue, Ridgewood. For more information, call (201) 445-8820 or visit online at www.veincures.com.
