McMahon The Ramapo High School Academic Decathlon Team, coached by social studies teacher Meredith Noah, finished first in the Region II competition of the New Jersey Academic Decathlon at an all-day event held at the local high school. The team also placed first in the Super Quiz on evolutionary biology. The Indian Hills High School Academic Decathlon Team, coached by English teacher Lisa Acquaire, placed second overall in the competition of the 11 schools that participated in the contest, and first among Division I teams. Indian Hills also placed second in the Super Quiz. Both Ramapo and Indian Hills qualified for the New Jersey State Finals that was scheduled for Feb. 28 at Morris Knolls High School. The winner of that competition will be eligible to represent New Jersey at the National Academic Decathlon on April 22 to 25 in Memphis, Tennessee. In this year’s Regional Decathlon, Ramapo and Indian Hills students won eight of the nine medals awarded for overall scores in each division. The overall gold medal winners also received a $200 check. Adrien Perkins of Indian Hills, Kerriann Zier of Ramapo, and Andrew Peterson of Indian Hills won gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively, in the honors division. Thomas Hoesly of Ramapo, Jack Potash of Indian Hills, and Joseph Castor of Indian Hills earned gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively, in the scholastic division. At the varsity level, Ramapo students Matthew Keller and Colleen Damico won gold and silver medals, respectively. At the recent awards dinner, Zier delivered the prepared speech that earned her the highest score in the competition in that event.
