Her own father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran and a widower who raised Dodd and her five brothers – one of whom was a newborn -- as a single parent on their farm in eastern Washington. Dodd realized how selflessly her father had acted and how difficult it must have been to raise such a large family. In his honor, she held a Father’s Day event in Spokane, Washington in June, near the date of her father’s birth. Her proposal was warmly received by the members of the Spokane YMCA and by the local ministers. William Jennings Bryan also supported Father’s Day, noting the important relationship between a parent and a child. Newspapers ran stories about the Spokane celebration, and interest in Father’s Day grew, although it did not catch on as quickly as Mother’s Day had. Individuals in Pennsylvania and West Virginia had reportedly conducted celebrations of fathers in 1908, but Dodd’s efforts won more widespread attention. President Woodrow Wilson and his family observed Father’s Day in 1916. Eight years later, President Calvin Coolidge recommended that the individual states hold their own celebrations. However, it was not until 1966, when President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day, and subsequently when President Richard Nixon signed the law in 1972 that the holiday became permanent. Two years later, Dodd was honored for her contribution at the World’s Fair in Spokane in 1974. She died in 1978 at age 96. Each year, Father’s Day celebrants send an estimated 85 million greeting cards in honor of their dads.
