Friends encourage healthy lifestyle The Friends of the Midland Park Library will be sponsoring two programs for adults this month. Master Ted Peng and the New Jersey Tai Chi Association will give a demonstration on tai chi on Monday, June 22, at 7:30 p.m. at the Midland Park Library. Peng has studied tai chi in both China and Taiwan and is certified by the National Tai Chi Chuan Association and the Taipei Tai Chi Chuan Association as a master and a referee in competitions. Both Peng and the New Jersey Tai Chi Association have performed all over Bergen County. Tai chi reportedly promotes better mental health and improves quality of life. Attendees are encouraged to wear loose fitting clothing to the program. Audience participation will follow the demonstration. On Thursday, June 24 at 7:30 p.m., Dr. Alfred Fenelle will offer life strategies for managing stress. Dr. Fenelle is a graduate of Palmer Chiropractic College and has been practicing for 20 years. His practice uses a holistic approach to improving health and is dedicated to educating the community on making lifestyle changes to reduce stress and eliminate poor habits. Dr. Fenelle serves on the board of directors for the Council of New Jersey Chiropractors and is a member of the International Chiropractic Association. He also serves on the board for the Rochelle Park Rotary. Both programs are free and open to the public, but registration is required. Contact the Midland Park Library at (201) 444-2390. Soccer Association holds registration, sells clothing Midland Park Soccer Association reminds all parents and players to mail in their registration for the fall season. Registration is open to players entering kindergarten through grade 12. Forms are available at the Barn on Dairy Street, the Baseball Card Store, and the Midland Park Library. The Midland Park Soccer Association is selling soccer clothing. Items include: sweatshirts, crew neck and hooded, sweat pants, T-shirts, long and short sleeve, and shorts. Cooperstown team holds Car Wash The 2009 Cooperstown baseball team is holding a Car Wash on Saturday, June 6 form 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held at Midland Park High School. Proceeds will help send the team to Cooperstown this summer. Board of education to meet The Midland Park Board of Education will meet on Tuesday, June 9 at 8 p.m. The meeting will be held in the August C. DePreker Media Center in Midland Park High School. Garage Sale planned The Midland Park United Methodist Church is holding a Garage Sale on Saturday, June 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Rain date will be June 13. Hot dogs and beverages will be available. Seniors seek yarn for projects The Northwest Bergen Regional Senior Center located in Midland Park is looking for donations of yarn for its needlework group. The knitters meet at the center on Mondays and Thursdays to make blankets for hospitals and veterans. Donations of yarn can be dropped off at the Northwest Bergen Senior Center, located at 46-50 Center Street in Midland Park or call (201) 445-5690. The Northwest Bergen Regional Senior Center is open to all area senior citizens age 60 and older. A wide variety of activities, services, and a hot lunch program are offered Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hudson River artists to be discussed The Friends of the Midland Park Memorial Library will host Geoff Welch on Friday, June 5 at 1 p.m. Welch will speak on the artists from the Hudson River school of painting. He will present a slide show and discussion on these painters and their subject matter, much of which include the
Highlands Region. Welch is the curator of Harmony Hall, a National Register of Historic Sites owned by the Town of Ramapo, New York. He has been researching the art of the Highlands region for over a decade. Welch founded the Ramapo River Committee and has presented 14 annual Ramapo River Watershed Conferences. He also serves as the Ramapo River Watershed Keeper for the Ramapo River Watershed Intermunicipal Council. This program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. MPTV fundraiser set MPTV is hosting a fundraiser at Shortway’s Barn located 991 Goffle Road in Hawthorne on Monday, June 8. Have lunch or dinner at Shortway’s on June 8, and 15% of the proceeds will benefit MPTV. Summer camp openings The Midland Park Recreation Department still has availability the weeks of June 29, July 6 and Aug. 3. There are limited openings available in the weeks of July 13, 20, and 27. Library offers stories, crafts Story time sessions at the Midland Park Public Library will begin on June 2. Children ages three to five can come to the library on Tuesdays, June 2, 9 and 23 at 2 p.m. or on Thursdays, June 4, 11, 18 and 25 at 11:15 a.m. Twoyear-olds accompanied by an adult will have story time on Wednesdays, June 3, 10 and 24 at 10:30 a.m. Children can make something for dad’s special day on Thursday, June 18. Vacation Bible School offered Faith Reformed Church in Midland Park is planning this summer’s daily Vacation Bible School. The theme this summer is Camp Son Rock. Senior Social set Midland Park Recreation is sponsoring a Senior Social under the new pavilion in Wortendyke Park on Thursday, June 18 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Ian Gallagher will provide musical entertainment. There will be plenty of seating available and refreshments will be served. Parking for this event is at the Park-n-Ride located behind Havel’s Stationery store on Central Avenue. Bergen County Community Transportation and Mill Gardens Assisted Living has offered to provide assistance to those in need of transportation to and from this event. Bus seating is limited; contact the recreation department immediately if in need of transportation at (201) 652-2747. In the event of rain, this event will take place at the Midland Park Social Hall, behind the firehouse on Witte Drive. Workshop registration open Calling all actors, singers, and dancers. Registration is open for the Park Players’ Summer Theater Workshop. This year’s workshop will run Monday, July 13 through Thursday, July 30. The final performance will be on the evening of July 30. The workshop will meet Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to noon in Memorial Hall at Midland Park High School. Participants should bring a snack each day. Snacks will also be available for purchase. The cost is $200 for one child, and $375 for two children, with a maximum of $450 per family. Checks should be made payable to Park Players and mailed to Laurie Kamp, 34 Third Street, Midland Park. Golf Outing planned The Midland Park High School Baseball Program will be hosting its Fourth Annual Golf Classic on June 29 at the Great Gorge Country Club in Vernon. The cost is $125 and includes green and cart fees, range balls, as well as breakfast and lunch. Hole sponsorships are also available for $100. Singles and foursomes are welcome.
