School board seeks voter approval for capital projects
by Frank J. McMahon The Franklin Lakes Board of Education plans to hold a Sept. 29 referendum seeking voters’ approval of a $1,327,900 expenditure for capital improvements that were not included in the district’s last budget due to budgetary constraints. The projects would include roof repairs at the Franklin Avenue Middle School primarily, new boilers for the Woodside Avenue School, a new security key system for three of the schools and renovated locker rooms and bathrooms at the middle school. School Business Administrator Michael Solokas advised that the new boilers are needed because the existing ones at the Woodside are old and inefficient, and the new security system is needed to allow teachers to lock their classrooms from the inside if an intruder enters the school. If voters approve the referendum, 40 percent of the cost of the capital improvements, or $531,160 would come in the form of aid from the New Jersey Department of Education.
The school board is also considering the inclusion of a second question that would fund installation of solar panels on all the schools. This question, which is not supported by all the trustees, will be discussed at the board’s Aug. 4 meeting. A decision on including the special question as part of the September referendum will be decided at that time. The solar panel project would involve a $2.9 million expenditure to install solar panels on the Woodside Avenue, High Mou nt ain Road, Colonial Road (continued on page 7)
