‘Public Enemies’
(continued from Entertainment page) Marion Cotillard (“La Vie En Rose”) effective as Dillinger’s girlfriend, Billie Frechette. But there is never more than a surface look at any of them. Other characters, such as gangster Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi), Anna Sage (Branka Katic), a madam threatened with deportation unless she cooperates with the FBI, and Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) would be interesting if viewers were given more about them than the bare essentials. The look of this film is lush thanks to production designer Nathan Crowley. Period clothes, storefronts, weapons, and automobiles recreate the American Midwest of over 70 years ago. In one scene, two sides of a main Chicago thoroughfare have been dressed in 1933 vintage, complete with trolley tracks. Much in the movie appears contrived or enhanced for dramatic effect, but the basic facts are accurate. Dillinger’s life and crime spree are the perfect subject matter for an action picture. With all the talent on view, however, it is disappointing that audiences cannot come away with more insight into Dillinger and Purvis. The screenplay by Mann, Ronan Bennett, and Ann Biberman gives a very pared-down version of their lives. Rated R for violence and strong language, “Public Enemies” has the look of “Bonnie & Clyde,” the action of “Scarface,” and the aspirations of “The Godfather.” Its running time of close to two and a half hours is far too long, since there are obvious places where cuts could have been made without hurting dramatic flow. It is always a treat to see Depp on screen. He is one of the best young actors Hollywood has produced and his star power does a lot to bolster “Public Enemies,” a movie that never achieves its potential.

DVDs
(continued from Restaurant page) “Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience” (Walt Disney Home Entertainment) is available in a deluxe extended edition which includes a Blu-ray, DVD, and digital copy of the film. The three-disc set comes with four pairs of 3-D glasses, but the 3-D effect is observable only on the Blu-ray disc. The Jonas Brothers are the hottest thing in show biz at the moment, with their concerts selling out shortly after tickets go on sale. They are neither better nor worse than many other rock acts, but they do convey tremendous energy in performance which translates nicely to the home viewing experience. Of course, if you are the parent of a pre-adolescent girl, you already know about this release and your daughter has been begging you to get it. Youngsters will appreciate that this edition offers songs not in the movie plus two bonus songs and an “Up Close and Personal” feature: “Inside the Jonas Brothers on Tour,” edited to resemble media footage of the early Beatles and sequences from “A Hard Day’s Night.” “The Lucille Ball Specials” (MPI Home Video) contains two TV specials made in 1975. By then, Lucy had starred in three successful TV sitcoms, the iconic “I Love Lucy” (1951-1957), “The Lucy Show” (1962-1968), and “Here’s Lucy” (1968-1974). She had also starred in several one-hour comedy shows on the “Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse” and “Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.” In “Lucy Gets Lucky,” Lucy is in Las Vegas to see her favorite entertainer, Dean Martin, and gets a job working at the MGM Grand casino. In typical Lucy Ricardo fashion, she keeps messing up on the job, only to have herself saved by the conveniently present Martin. In “Three for Two,” Lucy teams with another TV pioneer, Jackie Gleason, in a trio of comedy-dramas centering on various aspects of marriage. It seems Lucy never wanted to stop working and the TV networks were always happy to embrace her whenever she wanted to return. By 1975, however, she had just come off a movie (“Mame”) that she hoped would be her big-screen comeback, but received dismal reviews. These specials are mildly entertaining, but Lucy seems more desperate than funny. Bonuses include bloopers and rare Lucy footage.
