Parenting workshop planned “Parenting from Principles,” a workshop aimed at parenting teenagers, will be presented Jan. 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes Public Library. Fern Weis, who is certified through the Institute for Professional Coaching, will address various areas of parenting, including setting clear expectations, improving communication with teens, and using 10 priorities of effective parenting to help teenagers during these formative and sometimes strained periods of life. Registration is not required. If possible, both parents should attend. The Franklin Lakes Public Library is located at 470 DeKorte Drive in Franklin Lakes. School forum meetings scheduled Two public meetings will be held to give parents of school age children and residents the opportunity to learn more about the kindergarten through eighth grade programs and the upcoming events this school year. Meetings will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. and Thursday, Jan. 22 at 9:30 a.m. Both meetings will be held in the High Mountain Road School library. Kindergarten registration to begin The Franklin Lakes Public Schools will hold kindergarten registration at Woodside Avenue School, High Mountain Road School, and Colonial Road School Jan. 20 through 23 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Parents of students who will enter kindergarten in September 2009 may register their children at their school of attendance: High Mountain Road School, 765 High Mountain Road; Woodside Avenue School, 305 Woodside Avenue; or Colonial Road School, 749 Colonial Road. Anyone unsure of which school a child will attend should call (201) 891-1856. Children are eligible for the kindergarten class in
September 2009 if they were born before Oct. 1, 2004. Children do not have to be present during registration. An orientation program will be scheduled for May 2009, and parents will schedule an appointment for their child to participate in a screening activity to help determine kindergarten readiness. Preschool information available Registration is now open for the 2009-10 Franklin Lakes Schools’ preschool program for three and fouryear olds named, Bright Horizons Early Learning Center. There are two options, morning half-day or fullday, Monday through Friday at High Mountain Road School. School hours for the half-day program are 9 to 11:30 a.m. without lunch or 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. with lunch. The full-day hours are 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Classes follow the traditional school calendar relevant to opening and closing dates, school closings and vacations. An information session will be held at High Mountain Road School, 765 High Mountain Road on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. The preschool class is designed as a general education program open to all Franklin Lakes residents. Class size for each session is limited to 14 children, 11 Franklin Lakes children and three children from two existing preschool programs. A teacher certified in Early Childhood Education is assigned to the class along with one full-time instructional aide. Applications for the 2009-10 school year will be available at the Open House or can be obtained by calling the school office at (201) 891-4433. VFW seeks names of servicemen As part of a continuing effort to send letters and packages of support, Franklin Lakes VFW Post 5702 is seeking the names of troops serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. The VFW is asking the public to provide them with the mailing addresses of anyone from Oakland or
Franklin Lakes currently serving in Iraq or Afghanistan so they can add them to their support effort. Oakland residents having the name and address of a member of the military serving in Iraq or Afghanistan are asked to e-mail Post 5702 Adjutant, Doug Neralich at post5702adj@gmail.com. Library hosts discussion groups Franklin Lakes children and teens are invited to join one of the book discussion groups offered at the Franklin Lakes Public Library. Books for each month can be picked up at the front desk at Franklin Lakes Public Library. Snacks are always served. All readers in grades four, five, and six are invited to meet on the last Thursday of every month at 4 p.m. to participate in the Double Digits Book Discussion Group. Participants who cannot make the meeting can join in the discussion at http://kidzcornerblog.blogspot. com. On Jan. 29 the selection will be “The Journey that Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H. A. Rey” by Louise Borden. On Feb. 26, the group will discuss “Marley: A Dog Like No Other” by John Grogan. The topic for March 26 will be “No Talking” by Andrew Clements. On April 30, the selection will be “Please Write in This Book” by Mary Amato. Book Club for teens welcomes readers in grades seven through nine to meet at 4 p.m. at the library on the first Wednesday of each month. Participants who cannot make the meeting, can join in the discussion at http://katethelibrarian.blogspot.com. “The Dead and the Gone” by Susan Beth Pfeffer will be discussed on Feb. 4. “Ana’s Story” by Jenna Bush will be the subject on March 4, and “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” by John Boyne will be discussed on April 1.
