Area January 14, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 21 On Friday, March 27, Children’s Aid and Family Services will hold its signature annual fundraising gala at Hackensack Golf Club in Oradell. Named “There’s No Place Like Home,” the gala will feature fun elements from the classic movie “The Wizard of Oz.” This event raises money for agency services that help vulnerable children, families, young adults, and frail elderly in northern New Jersey. Many of the children served by the agency’s foster care and adoption programs come to the agency with nothing but a few personal possessions, and memories marred by trauma and tragedy. With the agency’s help, they are able, often for the first time in their lives, to experience the things most children take for granted: clean clothes, three nutritious meals a day, visits to the doctor when they are sick, toys to play with, and books to read. “The gala is one of the major ways the agency raises funds to help support the vulnerable children and families it serves,” said Bob Jones, Ph.D., president and CEO of the agency. “Last year’s sponsors included Irwin Franchise Capital Corporation, Applebee’s, BD, Boiling Springs Savings Bank, TD Banknorth, and Toys R Us, to name a few. Many of our sponsors have supported this gala for several years and are very pleased by the recognition they have received from their association with this event. Attendance for the event is nearly 500 people from the northern New Jersey area. Our sponsors have played a huge role in the success of this event and we would welcome more businesses that would like to consider partnering with us in this way.” Every net penny raised is used to improve the lives of the agency’s clients. For example, proceeds from past events allowed the agency to build its educational support fund and assist young adults with college and other post-secondary training costs, provide diapers and formula to needy local families, and recruit foster and adoptive parents for children whose only wish is a loving, nurturing home. The sixth annual gala will include cocktails, sumptuous hors d’oeuvres and a buffet, an open bar throughout the evening, a DJ, prizes, and auctions featuring exciting and Children’s Aid & Family Services sets 2009 gala luxurious travel packages, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and an assortment of unique items. Noise ordinance (continued from page 6) the use of property maintenance machinery would not be permitted on legal holidays or on Sundays, except that property owners would be permitted to operate such property maintenance machinery on their own property on Sundays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The use of property maintenance equipment would also be permitted during the prohibited hours in case of an emergency in the interest of public health and safety. However, the property maintenance equipment would always have to be operated with a functioning muffler. The code currently prohibits loud, disturbing, and unnecessary noise from radios, televisions, and phonographs between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., and loudspeakers and sound amplifiers, yelling, shouting, hooting, whistling, or singing on the public streets. The code also addresses noise from animals, the sounding of any horn or warning device on any automobile, motorcycle, bus or other vehicle, except when required by law; and the discharge into the open air of the exhaust of any steam engine, stationary internal-combustion engine or motor vehicle, except through a muffler or other device which must effectively prevent loud or explosive noises. Prohibitions include automobiles, motorcycles, or vehicles so out of repair or loaded in such manner as to create loud and unnecessary grating, grinding, rattling or other noise or the operating or use of any pile drivers, steam shovels, pneumatic hammers, derricks, steam or electric hoists or any tools or equipment which would make any loud or disturbing noise on any Sunday, legal holiday or on weekdays between the hours of 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. Also prohibited is the creation of any excessive noise on any street adjacent to any school, institution of learning, church, or court while the same is in use, or adjacent to any hospital, which unreasonably interferes with the working of such institution or which disturbs or unduly annoys patients in the hospital. The sounding of any whistle attached to any building or locomotive, except as a warning to prevent injury to life or property, is also prohibited. The shouting or crying out of any peddler or vendor selling wares upon any street or public place is prohibited, and the playing of any drum, loudspeaker or other instrument or device or the creation of any noise for the purpose of attracting attention to any performance, show or sale or display of merchandise is prohibited. The ordinance also prohibits the operation of any air conditioner, refrigerator unit, cooling tower, evaporative condenser, air-cooled condenser, mechanical fan, compressor unit or other such apparatus which causes frequent, irregular or continued noise that causes discomfort or annoyance to, or which unreasonably invades the privacy of the public. Sound trucks, however, may be operated upon the issuance of a permit by the police chief for each occasion and each location with certain restrictions. F.J.
