Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • February 18, 2009 Wyckoff Mayor reports savings from purchasing consortium by John Koster Joint purchasing of sports and recreation equipment through a consortium of Wyckoff, Franklin Lakes, and Oakland – known by the acronym WOLF by the Wyckoff Township Committee – has saved 35 percent of the cost of 246 items bid, ranging from first aid kits to baseball hats and sports trophies. Wyckoff serves as the lead agency for the threemunicipality purchasing group, formed late last year as financial constraints on local government became increasingly draconian. “We are pleased that the first round of the WOLF Cooperative Group has achieved the desired result of lowering expenses for our taxpayers,” Mayor Joseph Fiorenzo said. “By proceeding forward with our recreation bid for three towns, we increased the quantity of our purchases, and, therefore, our purchasing power, we received price reductions of approximately 35 percent of the items. Some of the price reductions were dramatic. For example, we achieved a 25 percent reduction over last year in the purchase of our baseball Tshirts, 24 percent savings on basketball T-shirts, and 27 percent on kindergarten T-Ball T-shirts. “We hope to build on this success with next year’s recreation bid. More importantly, we hope that this provides an impetus for the expansion of the cooperative efforts among our three communities. In these challenging economic times, we must be more businesslike in our approach to government and look beyond our borders for creative ways to decrease the cost of government. While we live in very challenging economic times, such times present an opportunity to rethink and change the way we deliver services to our communities. Wyckoff has been committed to this for some time and will continue to explore all possible avenues to reduce spending to minimize the tax burden on our residents.” Another local shared service arrangement features Wyckoff providing zoning and property maintenance enforcement for Franklin Lakes while that municipality advertises for a new zoning and property maintenance official. The relationship is expected to continue for approximately 60 days. Subcommittees from the three municipal governments meet each month to discuss and plan for possible future savings. •• • • •• •• The Cadillac Club of North Jersey has elected Bob Walton of Wyckoff one of four vice presidents for its board of directors for 2009.
