Page 2 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • February 18, 2009 Villadom Happenings ‘Images in Stone’ to be presented Jean Claude-Marchionni, designer, stone carver, and sculptor for public and private clients in Europe and the United States will be the guest speaker at The Women’s Guild of Old Paramus Reformed Church. “Images in Stone” will be presented on Wednesday, March 4 at 1 p.m. Claude-Marchionni, who has a studio in Midland Park, will share a visual presentation of more than 25 years of his architectural and ornamental stonework and restoration for such landmarks as the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church, and the Jewish Museum extension in New York City. Other commissions have included renaissance carvings for a New York hotel, a communion table for a Manhattan church, and works for private homes across the United States. Goodwill offerings will be appreciated. The Paramus Reformed Church is located at 600 East Glen Avenue at Route 17, in Ridgewood. ECLC Foundation hosts benefit The Ho-Ho-Kus campus of ECLC of NJ will hold a Dinner and Auction on Thursday, March 19 at the Tides in North Haledon. All proceeds will go to the ECLC Foundation. ECLC of NJ is an accredited nonprofit organization that provides special education services for over 600 children and young adults with severe learning and/or language disabilities and other developmental disabilities, including cognitive impairments and autism. The ECLC Foundation provides subsidies for after school programs, respites, Community Personnel Service, a supported employment agency, and the new PRIDE, which is an adult day program. Bryan’s Run coming up Bryan’s Dream Foundation will be holding its third annual Bryan’s Run on Saturday, March 28 at 9:30 a.m. at the Academy of the Most Blessed Sacrament located at 782 Franklin Lake Road in Franklin Lakes. Race day registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. Bryan’s Run is a 5K race for men, women, and children of all ages. The 1K Fun Run is for children age 12 and younger. Bryan’s Run is sponsored by the Bryan’s Dream Foundation, established in memory of Bryan Opremcak. Opremcak passed away at age 12 in January 2006 from Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) one of the most aggressive kinds of brain tumors. One hundred percent of the race entry fees and donations will go to Bryan’s Dream Foundation to support pediatric brain tumor awareness. Entry fees are $15 for the Kid’s Fun Run 1K only. Nominations sought for Berrie Award Nominations for the 2009 Russ Berrie Award for Making a Difference will be accepted by The Russell Berrie Foundation through Feb. 27. New Jerseyans who have made a significant difference in their communities through a heroic effort or a lifetime of service are eligible for cash awards of up to $50,000. Established in 1996 by the late Russell Berrie, founder of Russ Berrie and Company, Inc., and Ramapo College of New Jersey, the awards honor “unsung heroes” from throughout the state. Up to 19 individuals will be recognized for making a significant difference in the well-being of their communities during the annual spring award ceremony at Ramapo College in Mahwah. The Russell Berrie Foundation will provide monetary awards of up to $50,000, $35,000, and $25,000, and runnerup grants of $2,500 each. Financial course offered to retirees The Ridgewood Community School will offer a course titled “Mistakes Retirees Make with their Finances.” It will be given in three sessions: March11, 18, and 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Ridgewood. The instructor is Harris R. Reinstein, MBA, CLU, ChFC. This basic level course is designed for mature individuals who are retired, or planning their retirement, and want to avoid costly financial mistakes. Topics will include how to increase a portfolio’s performance potential. The program will also cover the attributes of a good long term care policy, and how to reduce taxes. Learn how to manage risk by diversifying asset classes, how to avoid 401K and IRA rollover mistakes, and how much money is needed to retire comfortably. Registration has begun. Goldberg to perform with Bergen Philharmonic The Bergen Philharmonic will host Russian/Israeli pianist Victor Goldberg as its guest artist on March 21. He is the recipient of several awards, including the 2008 Pro Musicis International Award. Hailed for his imaginative interpretations, Goldberg continues to fascinate audiences around the world. He will perform the Brahms “Piano Concerto #1.” The evening’s performances will also include “La Forza Del Destino Overture” and Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty Suite.” The concert will be held at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, 655 Teaneck Road in Teaneck at 8 pm. Grief series to begin at Valley Valley Hospice will be offering a free program, “Dealing with Loneliness.” This presentation is the first in the Conversation on Grief Series. Henry Fersko-Weiss, L.C.S.W., manager, social services, Valley Home Care will provide helpful strategies and tips for coping with loss. The program is open to anyone who has experienced a significant loss through serious illness or death. It will be held on Wednesday, March 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Dorothy B.
