Seniors plan trip The Franklin Lakes Seniors are planning a trip to “The Music of America” show at the Hunterdon Hills Playhouse in Hampton on March 10. A luncheon is included with a choice of five entrees. The bus will leave from the Franklin Lakes Recreation Center at 9 a.m. The cost is $50 for Franklin Lakes residents and $55 for non-residents. Spend a few hours just for fun at Franklin Lakes Library every other Friday afternoon from March 13 through June 19, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Students in grades three and older, are welcome to participate on a first-come, first-served basis. No registration is necessary. Snacks will be provided, along with games like Shaun White Snowboarding Road Trip, Guitar Hero III, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, DDR, and more. Feel free to bring along extra remotes, wheels, and friends. The Franklin Lakes Public Library is located at 470 DeKorte Drive in Franklin Lakes. Local author to lead workshop Aspiring writers are invited to a two-session young writers’ workshop with local author, Leigh Ann Kidwell, on Monday, Feb. 23 and Monday, March 2 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Both sessions will include writing prompts, group exercises, sharing with the group, and one-on-one with the author. Participants are invited to bring in a story they are currently working on and have it critiqued. Each day there will be a drawing for a signed copy of one of the following books: “The Year I Lost My Popularity!” or “Summer Vineyard.” This free program is open to all teens and young adults who are 12 years or older. Teen poetry contest set Teens and young adults in grades seven through 12 are invited to submit an original poem or song to the Franklin Lakes Library’s second Teen Poetry Contest. Entries should be no more than 250 words. Entry forms may be picked up at the library or printed from the website at www.franklinlakeslibrary.org. All entries must be submitted to the Franklin Lakes Library or directly to kate_thelibrarian@yahoo. com. Entry forms should accompany the submission. The deadline for submissions is Monday, April 6, no entries will be accepted after that date. Winners will be announced during National Library Week, April 12 through 18. First prize will be a $50 American Express Gift Card and second and third prizes will be a $25 Starbucks gift card. Online journaling & scrapbooking available Celebrate Teen Tech Week at Franklin Lakes Library! Teens in grades seven through 12, will be guided through online scrapbooking sites like mashable.com, and they will work together to compose original creations. Teens are invited to showcase their digital words and pictures in a whole new light, inspired by the strength of Miranda’s journal in “Life as We Knew It,” the 2009 One Book New Jersey teen selection. Participants should save some favorite digital images (online or otherwise) and bring them to the class. Wine tasting benefit planned The Franklin Lakes Lions Club will host a Night of Wine Tasting on Friday, March 13 at the Indian Trail Club on Franklin Lakes Road in Franklin Lakes. The tasting will be from 7 to 10 p.m.
The Wine Seller of Ridgewood will be showcasing an extensive variety of wines featuring wines from different regions of the country and the world. Hot and cold appetizers will be served along with a hot buffet, a pasta station, dessert, and coffee. The cost is $85 per person. All proceeds derived from the Wine Tasting Night and wine purchased will go to the many charities that the Franklin Lakes Lions Club supports. Some of the charities include: Camp Marcella for the Blind, The Seeing Eye, Saint Joseph’s School for the Blind, The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Eva’s Village, Oasis, The Arc, Eastern Christian Children’s Retreat, The Franklin Lakes Library, and the Franklin Lakes Ambulance Corps. Barnert to host summer camp Barnert Temple Preschool and Family Center invites Jewish parents who have a child between two and four years of age to visit the school and learn about its innovative camp program, specially designed for the needs of children ages two through four. The program will include lots of outdoor activities, a large water and sand play area, a working garden, and nature walks and sports activities. Barnert offers a full-day option for campers on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Full-day programs include enrichment opportunities, including “The Magical World of Animals”, “Around the World in 8 Weeks,” and “I Did a Mitzvah Today” in which children participate in various activities that help to improve the world. Special programs are also brought in such as a petting zoo, magician, and nature presentations. Each group is supervised by Barnert’s regular, CPR/ First Aid-trained, preschool teachers. Camp Barnert schedule is designed to be flexible and convenient for families. Four-, five-, six-, seven- or eight-week sessions are available.
