Midland Park

The Midland Park mayor and council are looking to scale down the renovations to the municipal building to bring the project within the budgeted amount. The project has been under consideration for several years in order to better accommodating the building department and the municipal court. In discussing the project during last week’s council meeting, officials targeted to proposed new entrance to the building, suggesting that it could be incorporated into the existing footprint of the building or eliminated altogether to cut down costs. “Is it necessary?” asked Mayor Joseph Monahan. “Perhaps we can achieve functionality within the existing footprint.” The new more prominent common entrance at the rear of the building was designed to provide unified access

to all departments. Borough Clerk Addie Hanna pointed out that moving the entrance into the building would reduce the available storage space, which is at a premium. The council has budgeted $210,000 for the project, but recent architect’s estimates set the cost closer to $250,000 when wiring, shelving and moving expenses are added in. Plans call for converting part of a garage and two adjacent small storage rooms into offices for the building/ zoning department. The proposed renovations would provide a separate code official office and separate desks for the various subcode officials, all of whom must now share the two available desks. Also provided would be an area for the public to review files, applications and blueprints, a task which now
Recreation Department forming Pre-school Club
Midland Park Recreation is sponsoring a new Pre-school Club for four- and five-year-olds. The group will meet on Tuesdays from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the DePhillips Community Center, 50 Dairy Street, Jan. 5 through 26. Each
meeting will be built around a story, craft or activity taught by the recreation director. Registration fee is $20. Forms can be picked up at the center or online at www.mpnj.com under recreation.
must be conducted on a small ledge or on the floor. The new quarters would also permit removal of heavy filing cabinets from the second floor, where they are causing possible structural damage to the 19th century building. Relocation of the building department to the first floor would give adequate space on the second floor for courtrelated activities: chambers for the municipal judge, room for the prosecutor and public defender to meet with defendants, and a conference room for court or mayor-and-council-related activities. At present the prosecutor meets with defendants in the building official’s office. Defendants must meet with their attorneys in the narrow, crowded hallway with no privacy. The tax assessor’s office would remain on the second floor, as would the court/mayor and council chambers. Council members agreed to contact the architect to see if the entrance could be reduced while still meeting the council’s goals.
