December 2, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES I & II • Page 17 The New Jersey State Department of Transportation has rejected for the second year in a row Midland Park’s request for funds to reconstruct Spruce Street and Highwood Avenue. The borough had applied for $250,000 under the 2010 Municipal Aid Program for the first phase of the project. The total reconstruction of the mile-long connector roadway was expected to cost $400,000. At the time the borough applied for the state grant, the borough’s engineer and DPW foreman evaluated the various qualifying streets in town and determined that Spruce/Highwood was the most likely to Borough passed over for Highwood/Spruce DOT grant receive a high score for getting the state funds. The project was to include drainage, curbing and resurfacing. Spruce Street residents often complained of flooding problems since the road, built after World War II, had no storm drainage system. The grant would have allowed for paving at a uniform width of 29 ft, with curbing to delineate the edge of the pavement for added safety and to control drainage flow to avoid flooding of roadway and private property. This year the Municipal Aid Program awarded 671 grants totaling more than $103.75. Due to the increase in the amount available over previous years, 87 additional municipalities received grants. Previous Midland Park projects funded with DOT moneys included the reconstruction of Bank Street, Greenwood and Paterson avenues and the repaving of Sico- MIDLAND PARK Holiday GIFT GUIDE mac and Franklin avenues, among others. Bank Street was done in three stages due to the cost and the fact that DOT had an annual grant cap of $150,000. The cap was removed last year because it was limiting larger worthy projects which would take too long to complete in $150,000 sections.
