Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • August 26, 2009 Wyckoff Committee explains construction code enforcement by John Koster A resident who asked the Wyckoff Township Committee for information about how the construction code is enforced received an explanation from several committee members at last week’s brief public meeting. Martin Costello asked who was responsible for the enforcement of the requirements set down by the board of adjustment when granting variances. The issue was raised because a wall that had been constructed on Russell Avenue based on a variance was found not to be in compliance, and changes had been negotiated to make that wall acceptable. Wyckoff Township Committeeman Rudy Boonstra told Costello the zoning board of adjustment has no inspection authority, and that the construction code official is the inspector for all local construction, with or without variances. Boonstra, supported by Mayor Joseph Fiorenzo, added that in cases where the construction varies either from the code or from the conditions imposed by variances, the construction code official is authorized to order changes, up to and including demolition, to rectify the situation. Members of the township committee said they recalled at least two cases in which construction that had taken place without approval, or contrary to code, had been demolished under the orders of the local authorities.
