Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • August 5, 2009 Wyckoff Ambulance corps offers CPR courses at several levels The Wyckoff Volunteer Ambulance Corps is sponsoring CPR courses at several levels, some leading to two-year certification and one just for child safety around the household. “CPR is most beneficial when it’s been started before we get there,” said Alan Kicks, a certified CPR instructor and ambulance corps member. He adds that gyms and other public facilities have defibrillators on hand in case of cardiac arrest, but the ability to operate the equipment is an important factor in successful resuscitation. “It’s all in the confidence of knowing how to use it, and to use it,” Kicks added. “We’ve got everything from a course called Family and Friends – non-certification – to care-giver courses which are good for a two-year certification,” explained Dr. Kevin Schulz, MD, an ambulance corps member who recently graduated from Drexel Medical School in Philadelphia and is now in residency at Morristown Memorial Hospital. The training at Wyckoff Ambulance Corps Headquarters near Wyckoff Town Hall and Firehouse #1 is mostly hands-on, with mannequins to demonstrate proper insertion of CPR mouthpieces and apparatus, and a belly-bag that pops out rubbertipped darts to show that the Heimlich Maneuver has been performed with adequate force. “People have come up to me and told me that everyone in town should take this course,” Dr. Schulz commented. The nominal fees are used to sustain the CPR curriculum. For more information, residents and anyone else interested should call (201) 848-0400 or send an e-mail to learncpr@wyckoffambulance.org.
