Soil cleanup to begin at former U-Save station
Remediation efforts at the former U-Save gas station in Midland Park are expected to begin by summer. The station at the corner of Godwin and Paterson avenues has been closed since the fall of 2005, when the underground tanks were removed. The Midland Park Planning Board last week gave approval to US Oil to place on the site the remediation devices necessary to comply with the plan approved by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. According to attorney Jerome Vogel, there are no plans to develop the property at the present time, although he said his client would like to find some use for it while it’s undergoing clean-up. As part of the site plan approval, US Oil will provide the borough with a written proposal on how the area will be beautified and maintained during the clean up. Among the items board members and members of the public would like to see are removal of the gasoline pumps and of the perimeter fence once the equipment is secured, sidewalk repairs, and site improvements, including planting of grass. By complying, US Oil would not be waiving its rights to the non-conforming aspects of the property and would be able to return to them in the future with no penalty. Plans call for erecting a wooden shed 10 to 11 ft. high towards the rear of the one-acre lot to house the equipment. The ground contamination remediation process approved by the NJDEP calls for using vapor extraction devices to extract the gasoline trapped in the soil and burn off the residue. The soil will be stored on site until it can be carted away, about a two-week period, Vogel said. Additionally, the water in the bedrock aquifer will be pumped, the volatile compounds will be removed using an air stripper, and the treated water will be discharged to an injection trench at the site. The system being used is capable of removing 90 percent of the BTEX compounds (continued on page 20)
