Midland Park April 1, 2009 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 7 The long-awaited renovations to the Midland Park Borough Hall to better accommodate the building department and the municipal court has now moved closer to reality. The borough council last week approved a contract with Blueline Architecture, LLC of Wyckoff to perform the architectural work for the project at a fee not to exceed $19,000. Part of the scope of Blueline’s job will be to revisit pre- Architect hired for borough hall renovations vious plans for the renovation and to meet with the employees in the departments to be affected by the improvements to make sure that their needs are well understood before the project is designed. The contract stipulates that the job must be designed to stay within the amount the borough has set aside for the work. The borough has $210,000 in its capital improvement fund earmarked for the project. According to Blueline’s Dedicated employee Laura Hyatt received a watch for five years of service at Friendly’s Restaurant in Midland Park. Debbie Hollenbeck hired Laura in 2004 when she was in her senior year at Emerson High School. She has worked for the past five years along with Project Hire, and her job coach Janet Morales. Laura loves her job and loves seeing the regulars: Barbara Moos, George Celines, James Carlough that come into Friendly’s. At right: Debbie Hollenbeck giving Laura Hyatt her watch. The borough has applied for a $40,000 Public Archives and Records Infrastructure Support (P.A.R.I.S.) grant to be used as part of the renovation. The grant would fund the installation of a vault and shelving for record management. Plans call for converting part of a garage and two adjacent small storage rooms into offices for the building/zoning department. A new more prominent common entrance at the rear of the building would provide unified access to all departments. The proposed renovations would provide a separate code official office and separate desks for the various subcode officials, all of whom must now share the two available desks. Also provided would be an area for the public to review files, applications and blueprints, a task which now must be conducted on a small ledge or on the floor. The new quarters would also permit removal of heavy filing cabinets from the second floor, where they are causing possible structural damage to the 19th century building. Relocation of the building department to the first floor would give adequate space on the second floor for courtrelated activities: chambers for the municipal judge, room for the prosecutor and public defender to meet with defendants, and a conference room for court or mayor-and-council-related activities. At present the prosecutor meets with defendants in the building official’s office.
